How to backup your HL2 (Steam) install.

the only way to fix a problem with steam is to uninstall steam and reinstall. so unless you have a purchased legally retail copy of the game, you should back it up if you downloaded it thru steam. there are 2 ways you can back it up.

1. in the Run dialog, type

steam://backup/

then just pick the games you want to backup and pick either CD or DVD as the backup size.

2. go into your
/valve/steam/SteamApps

and copy the entire contents of the /SteamApps folder to a safe location.
then when you install steam in the future you log into your account, close out steam copy that /SteamApps folder you backed up to the location it is supposed to be, and you are set. all your games will be there.

have fun!

EDIT: also when you do this make sure you copy the /config and /server folders so you don't loose any of those settings.

I agree on the sticky; however, I did change the title from sounding like a command to sounding like a guide.

ok. In chose the CD option and now there are 5 large files in the back up directory (inlcuding one that seems to be a steam executable). Am I correct then in assumig that I merely have to copy each of these onto CDs ( one to a cd). ?

update if you use the built in backup, you loose all your settings, but all your games are there at least.

Hello

The explenation to back up your saved games is that for the retail or non retail version. Is there a way to back up your saved games for the non retail version?

Im to far in the game to loose again my saves,
Im experiencing crashes and stutterring but dont have this with Doom or Unreal.
I have the 6600gt its Oc'ed but always been stable. I use the 77.76 Extreme drivers and had been stable so far. Tried reinstalling them but didnt fixed it.

THx

I planned to back up my games now that I have DoD:S and guess what? DoD:S is not listed as an option to back up, but Lost Coast (which is not yet available), is. See image, which shows everything except Opposing Force and Source SDK, which are below. Any ideas?

When you log onto Steam goto Play games try right clicking DoD:S and do backup game files. I did that and it listed the game to backup as well as everything else I have downloaded and is 100% and upto date. Bad thing is updating everything takes up 5gigs or so.
