Much better then the $50 they wanted when it first came out. Definite improvements in the Doom3 engine IMO. Not too bad on sys requirements either. I wish I had a cool new game to play!

Yea, unfortunately the FPS genre for the PC hasn't had many recent new releases. Looks like STALKER, Crysis, Shadowrun and UT III are the ones to look forward to this year, (hopefully).

Ah, prey, prey. <shakes head in disappointment>

It could have been a great game, it had everything going for it; excellent engine, great visuals, interesting plot, plenty of development resources, but it just doesnt quite get there.

Challenge not really there, storyline not developed properly (never really generates any excitement or tension), firefights are the old forumula; spaced apart and much the same room after room. The enemy combat AI is weak and predictable. And the enemies sound dumb, not menacing. (And I dont mean funny dumb as in Halo).

Portals could really introduce a very interesting game dynamic which should have been great fun, but here they are mostly treated merely as doors, with very few "gee wiz" moments.

Powered walkways, another interesting game mechanic which I've always liked in games. the idea of inverting the player seems innovative, but once again they rarely use it in any novel way and most of the puzzles were simple obstacle course stuff, god its like playing Mario bros.

Spirit walk, this is very interesting and could have generated some complex puzzles... but no, the puzzles in Prey are very simplistic, (go through door and push button), and so linear.

Death is nothing to be afraid of, there is no penalty and in fact its a useful tactic to die so as to generate more health and come back right where you left off. Any challenge that the game had left is destroyed by this dumbness. It would have been better if when the player dies they then have a choice to make, choice of new weapons or abilities, or return to an earlier checkpoint for example.

As in QuakeIV before it, some of the larger outdoor maps give a sense of scale but 90% of the game is moving room to room from one tedious firefight to the next.

In fact its making me nauseous just writing about it, so I'll shutup now.

I'm looking forward to Hellgate:London also but its a role-playing game so I didn't mention it. It's been pushed back a couple of times at least, now it has a Q3 2007 release.

Zapionics<alt>, are you trying to tell me I just wasted $19.07?

I'm just being a critic, you can still get enjoyment from the game so long as you dont have very high expectations. It has some good moments here and there. My score is 7/10...

Don't miss any of the Art Bell radio broadcasts. Some radios are a bit out of the way.

After playing through the game again, I actually think this game was better than I thought the first time through, graphically and otherwise. There's a 1.3 patch out now that allows multiplayer with players running it on a Mac, but doesn't fix bugs or change gameplay. It's available for both the retail version and is automatically downloaded for the Steam version, I think.
