| Computer doesn't power up with new CPU Hi all, I recently bought a new (for me) CPU, and installed it into my old desktop, but no joy came of it. Here are the specs of my computer, I hope they're detailed enough: Motherboard:Intel D865PERL (Old) CPU: Intel Pentium 4; 2.4/516K/800 (Replacement) CPU: Intel Pentium 4; 3.0/1M/800 RAM: 2.5 GB, I don't remember who manufactured them, but they work fine with my board. Power Supply: Antec SL400 (400W output) Master Hard Drive: Western Digital Model #WD400BB Slave Hard Drive: Western Digital Model #WD2000BB Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 5200 O/S: Windows XP Pro, Service Pack 1 What happened is this: I replaced my old CPU with my new one. I'm careful, I'm reasonably sure that I didn't wreck anything with static electricity or by smashing them, and when I plugged everything back in (including CPU fan, w/ thermal grease), the board's LCD "stand-by light" was glowing green, but when I start the thing up, the fans and lights come alive for all of half a second, and then go away again. I'm concerned that I mucked something up despite my precautions, so I reinstall my old CPU (which is nearly identical to the new one, but slower), and power things up. Works fine, Windows loads. I didn't kill my computer. Yay. So just for fun, I reinsert the new chip, CPU fan and all (but w/o grease), and get the same reaction as before. I'm wondering now if my power supply might not be up to the task, so I disconnect *everything* from it, except the Motherboard, the master HD, and the cooling fans, in case this new chip's an energy hog. Same deal as before. Now everything's plugged back in and my old CPU sits in its accustomed place. Does anyone have some suggestions? Did I buy a lemon, or is there something else which I'm missing here? I am open to any suggestion, however basic; I really have just enough computer knowledge to be dangerous. |

| Re: Computer doesn't power up with new CPU You might have to change some settings in the bios for the cpu, or update the bios for that cpu, get the directions for the MB and go to the intel site and see if there is an update to run that cpu on that board.

| Re: Computer doesn't power up with new CPU Thanks for the advice. I updated my BIOS; then had a delay when I encountered an erroneous password demand... silly Intel. The BIOS wasn't the problem, but I nailed it down. My board revision number isn't high enough... I had no idea that there were variations within a single board, I figured they'd call the new one something like, say, D866PERL. Learn something new every day. |

But with a BIOS update you should be at the "new revision" point. How many new BIOS's were issued between the one in your board and the newest one? | |

| Re: Computer doesn't power up with new CPU Board revision is not only Bios but hardware on the board. I would suggest you go to the Intel site and see what the fastest processor this board supports.

| Re: Computer doesn't power up with new CPU Sounds like you got a Prescott CPU (1M cache) that is not supported by the BIOS on the 865 PERL. Just update the BIOS (if one is available) and you should be fine.
