How to enter Safe Mode?

What's the proper way to enter Safe Mode? Can't get the rhythm of F8 (if that's it on this mobo/os). Have the latest BIOS. I'm running WinXPProSP1 and doing some prep for SP2. Have a Crucial RADEON 9200 128MB card.

I've been using the toggle in msconfig, but found that dangerous due to some weird hardware problem of my Dell 1901FP LCD suddenly not displaying whatever video mode Safe Mode uses.

Boot your machine and soon as you see the bios post screen start hitting the F8 key.

Thanks for the reply. That's what I've tried so far with no success -- but I'll try again diligently.

I had a logitech keyboard that had a botton on it that i would have to hit everytime to turn on the F's for them to work in the bios. Called something like F Lock.

yup, have to do that with my Micro$oft wireless keyboard.

after the BIOS, press F8 once a second until you get the menu to pop up.

Re: How to enter Safe Mode?

Bingo! A little key to the lower left of Esc. And, as you say, every time one reboots it turns off all the function keys -- so the sequence becomes "Quick turn 'em on & then hit F8." What were they thinking?

I've never noticed this because I use Del to enter BIOS on this machine which I built & maintain for my wife.

Now onward to the display problem....

Thanks a million!
