Yes TQ,
However, please note that the Intel MB manual states caution on using coolers that do Not cool the V regulators directly. Since the cpu fan blows parallel to the cpu, only the rear V regulators get the cooling and not the ones near the upper portion of the MB. My case has the exhaust fan very close to the cpu cooler and also has a kind of duct to increase the air velocity in that area. So the Zalman blows directly at the exhaust fan and the duct increases air circulation/velocity around the V regulators. I think the temp spec in the Intel manual states 105C (!) for max regulator temp.. and I hand touched mine under load and they were only "warm". I don't see a pbm here but just wanted you to know in case you have very warm ambient temp and are OCing.. One of these days I will put a temp probe on the regulator.

Thank you.
I think we'll be good, as I'm not doing any overclocking and the Antec case I'm using has good circulation. Still, I'll keep your caution in mind.

Olo02,
I also just noticed the bios change from 1378->1351. And here I waited for stability and "just" changed from1334->1378 a few days ago....
I am new to OCing, I have already tried just about all OCing configurations.. but when I tried the 1333 strap the machine would not even boot to the bios!! Had to use jumper.. Maybe the 1333 strap is the 1378 problem.(?)
(I did not try the 1333 strap when running the 1334 bios and all my tests were at stock Voltage)

TQ,
I think you will like it.. and I even though I am not one for "flash"... I like the LED.
Oh, I am not controlling the fan via the MB, so I do not know how that method of fan control will work.. I am using the Hardcano 13 w/ rpm readout and manual control... it works so well, I have not needed to go higher than the 1560 rpm I mentioned. Zalman provides a pot to control the fan though.

I also did not need to remove the MB to mount the cooler. My case is large and I was able to slip the mount backing under the MB for mounting..

Didn't you have to remove the motherboard to uninstall the stock HSF?

No you don't, turn the black pegs anti-clockwise and then pull towards you.

The Intel S478 heatsink design was much better IMO, quality wise.

No, as I remember, the Intel clips can be turned and pulled up to remove the HSF..
I had to loosen and lift the MB to install the mount backing though.
I did this when I was using the P4, but I think its all the same..
When I switched to the X6800, I then installed the Zalman right from the start..

Strange the 6600 is giving off so much heat TQ. I know you are a pro at installing hardware but a very important reminder is to make absolutely sure the four legs on the heat sink are completely punched through the mobo holes and locked to the edges off the holes. I always inspect each leg coming through the board that both leg halves are completely through the holes and locked over them. That is how you hear the clicking sound when you initially push them through. As far as heat sink compound goes. Both the Intel heat spreader and the stock/custom heat sink have probably left manufacturing in good enough condition and the quality heat transfer compounds like AS should be more than adequate to cover the discrepencies in surface finish. That is why the leveling of the heatsink is so important. Another thing is make sure your CPU fan is working correctly. At that temp it should be whirling away loudly. If you barely hear the fan at that temp then the temp is eroneous to begin with or you fan controller is disabled. Also you have to keep in mind about what all the CPU fan needs to cool if you go with a custom one. The NB heatsink and all the regulators get cooled from the stock Intel HSF. IMO all current stock and name brand HSF's are very good as long as they are installed properly and get adequate cool air supplied to them. I bet you that if you install Intel IDCC it will adequately control your CPU/case fans in Windows and you will see a big improvement. Also you want to have EIC enabled in BIOS. It may be under 'Power' menu. Try also to set the BIOS jumper to password. This enabled another menu in BIOS that you can not see otherwise. This is just to familiarize you with whats available in there and there are other settings you can select.

From what I read yesterday (VRzone link) the Bad Axe 2 has support for 800MHz memory bus, replaces the SI SATA controller with a Marvel (wasn't impressed with the SI controller), and is stamped 'Vista' ready. The power circuitry has been enhanced/upgraded also. The 2.8VDDR limit is outrageous as well. This board is going to break some records I bet. It would take a very good liquid/gas cooling system to reach the limits of this board IMO.

Mrs. TQ (who was installing the CPU and HSF) felt that one of the prongs on the heatsink didn't seem to snap in as securely as the other three. She examined it very carefully and fiddled with it, but she wasn't completely satisfied with the fit.
We'll look at that and install the IDCC to look at fan controls and see if we can get reasonable temps before we install the Zalman.
Nothing we can do until the weekend 'cause the rest of the week is busy with work plus a trip to Houston on Friday for my chemo.

You will have to remove the motherboard to install that Zalman. It takes a back plate that has to go from underneath so I don't know how you would do it otherwise unless your case has acces to the back of the socket. I hate those cheesy push pins Intel gives for a CPU HSF. They are ok for a northbridge maybe but I always though they were weak. Yes you could twist them out but might as well wait and do it when you have the board out. Though it's a pain, the back plate has a nice secure method of holding the HSF. I still have the Intel hardware for my 9500 Zalman I plan to use in a few months. I think Gewilikers had a point when he talked about concave surfaces on the stock HSF. I have read several posts where people had that problem. The Zalman installs much tighter though and I am almost sure it will resolve your trouble. Give you a little room to OC even if you don't like to do it. It super easy with those chips. Just maybe if you get bored one day
