When you install your Zalman, consider using the enclosed Fan Mate II controller. Previously on builds I never used it, on the 875HSF replacement I did. Was able to reduce the fan speed a tad decreasing some noise.

Sophisticated And Quiet

Tom's review of the 975X - may shed some light concerning CPU temps:

Maybe you misunderstand. You can use RAID on the other ports I just think you have to disable it on the one socket you are using for the SATA optical drive. In other words you don't have to use the other controller just I don't see any reason to aviod it. The 1.5g transfer rate on the silicon image is much faster then the drive can read/write

raid has to be enabled for each port? i'm completely new to sata, that's why i'm asking. i also know, that the speed of the silicon image controller is more than enough, but i'm a "purist" and really don't wanna have this device enabled (because it's third party and connected to the pci-bus afaik) ...

Thanks TQ, Please post your results using the Zalman..
I hope the mounting goes easy.. I was extra careful to Slowly apply equal torque after a very thin coat of AS5.
If you use the supplied Fanmate, maybe you can still hook up the rpm wire to the MB for an rpm readout via SW.
..and I don't remember which program used 20 MT Borax, but I think it was a western..

I never set up RAID on that particular board but in the bios there should be a place to enable RAID for the Intel controller. That should be enabled if running RAID0 of course. Then there should be a place to enable/disable RAID functions for each port, 4 in this case. The 2 with the RAID0 array should be enabled and the one with the SATA optical drive should be disabled.

When you get your motherboard it will have a manual that will tell you basic bios functions with some pictures. Or you could google D975XBX and you can finds some bios pics that way. I wouldn't worry about it this is a simple thing.

Well, we're back from Houston and will get to installing the Zalman today. I'll post as soon as we get the system back up and running and I can take the temps.

OK...the Zalman's in and the temp at boot is 38c. A far cry from the 64c with the Intel HSF.

Mrs.TQ wants me to open a trouble ticket with Intel. I said that they probably already know and she replied "Yeah, but you add your voice. Maybe they should reduce the price of the CPU to allow for people to buy their own cooler".
I think in the future we'll look at buying OEM CPU's, sans cooler.
