Do the contact test, and post some pics of the old HS.
Enough visual evidence on the web of their handywork, and they will quickly
clean up their act.

I think in the future we'll look at buying OEM CPU's, sans cooler.
Still a little warm but you should get better temps after the break in period. The Zalman looks nice in the case huh? OEM's are a good idea. I don't know exactually how much you save but I'm pretty sure it's enough to buy a good third party HSF. When I did my conroe build I got a 6600 OEM + D975XBX combo.

GWillakers, You have to have a certain amount of posts before you can post attachments. Not sure how many. 100 maybe?

Actually I think they probably have a great cooler.
The fan was very quiet.
The PWM fan was also very responsive to a change in CPU load.

Intel is letting their reputation get smeared by something as silly as a
the bottom of the HS not being flat.

A mirror finish NOT EQUAL Flat!

PS. Glad to see you are experiencing cooler temps.
Now enjoy your CPU... It's a good one.

It would at least save us the hassle of pulling the system apart for a second time. Worth it, I think.

I played a game for about half and hour, exited and checked the temp. It was only 43c. Not too bad.
And yes, the Zalman looks good in the case!

So now under load, you are running cooler than you used to idle.

The Zalman CNPS7000B-ALCU worked great for my 875. If it was me, I definitely would open a ticket with Intel. I would hound them until they came up with a coherant answer. I would even seek reimbursement. You should not have to spend extra monies at the start, to ensure your system is operating as intended. There is a law about that - its called "Merchantability"

BTW - Have you checked to see if S3 is working correctly?
