But it seems that my memory might not be supported by this mobo, it is not listed in Kingston's list of supported memory for bad axe2:

Kingston Technology Company - Kingston Memory Search - Search Results for:

Also the tested memory page for bad axe 2 at Intel's site Intel® Desktop Board D975XBX2 - System memory
says: "Double-sided DIMMs with x16 organization are not supported", does this apply to the memory I have?

Edit: Default timings for the ram by SPD are: 5-5-5-18, I've also tried setting 5-5-5-16 manually, no difference.

I haven't bothered with AHCI, reason being is that I haven't seen a real need for it on my system, and my harddrives perform just fine in IDE mode. My harddrives are defragged by Diskeeper Pro Premier.

and what does the bios configure in "auto" mode?

as i said: here the spd in the bios (bottom screen) are shown as 5-5-5-15, but the "auto" mode configures my modules to 5-5-5-16 ...

Re: Intel D975XBX (Bad Axe)

Hey,

I just picked up a new Intel heat sink on Ebay that comes from a retail QX9650. Got an RMA for my current Zalman last week so I can go to this new one. I like Intel stuff better than anything and I will be happy to use this one over anything else. I wasn't too impressed with the Zalman 8700 NT anyway, I got low 40'sC at idle plus some knarly reviews have popped up for it. This Intel cooler can't cool the CPU worse than that plus it should cool the mobo better. I also picked up some AC MX-2 from NE that I will be using on it.

Re: Intel D975XBX (Bad Axe)

Man, I had exactly the opposite experience with Intel HSF's and had to move to Zalman's to get the temps down on both my E6600's.

This new intel is like a Zalman 7700, my temps are very good! But the only way to get this cooler is to pay $1000 for the cpu or like Sandog did get one on e-bay!

Good news, then. I'd prefer to use a stock HSF whenever possible.

Nope, put a Thermaltake Silent 775D on my E6600, to keep in nice and cool.

You got that right, and it's got 4 heatpipes on it, as well as a 90mm fan on top the heatsink.

I'm happy with the one I got with my QX9650, it has a 120mm fan and keeps all 4 cores running at 3ghz about 32C and 48c fully loaded, not bad for a stock heatsink!!!!

Looks cool doesn't it?

It has a 120mm fan which is bigger than my Zalman. Also has the high/low fan speed switch to keep the fan noise below 36db. Can't wait to put this in.

My last two Zalmans kept my X6800 at around 39-42C at idle. Don't know if it is just a hot chip I have or not. I'll how the new cooler works out this week.
