I really don't know what we will see. I was hoping to at least get an official announcement from Intel on the 27th Dec. 2005 which is the date that has been bantered about for a month now. This should release the NDA's I figured but maybe not.

Order date should be the 17th, the third Monday in January.

The 955EE has shown up on Intels webpage. We should be getting some reviews on this new chip today along with the D975XBX. So far only the Inguirer gives a story on it.

X-Bit Labs has one up and the rest should follow shortly.

here is another review of the new Presler...

http://www.sudhian.com/showdocs.cfm?aid=723

"If dual core is what you seek, stick with the Athlon 64 X2 as Presler is a miss.
Intel has a lot of catching up to do and we hope Conroe/Merom will put up a tougher challenge"

I would hope that nobody expected any "unexpected" performance increases except for the clock speed increases and additional cache. The main areas of improvement were in thermals and cost reduction (process/packaging). After all, a Prescott is still a Prescott. However, that being said there are improvements that will be seen in the retail i975x boards and low latency memory compared to the standard press systems from Intel. I look at this launch as Intel maturing their 65nm process so Conroe/Merom are introduced without issues this summer.

I will say that running a 955EE at 370fsb x 12 on normal air cooling is fairly nice.

Conroe is Intel's big ticket main event...Presler was just the opening act...

From the data I seen this AM, It appears to have somewhat of a jump in general performance, still shy in gaming, consumes mucho power, and gives off a lot of heat. All in all, more of an improvement than I though would happen.

I am curious how it will compare to AMD's new offerings (FX60?) in a few weeks.

Yeah Conroe is not too far off since Intel pushed it to July now. I may just wait to do a build until then. I forgot about the EIST being disabled. I have it running on my 840EE when I run at stock speeds and it runs quite cool when I am not gaming but my old 3.73EE with 266 CPU bus was the same way. It did not have EIST and runs hot all the time. As far as benchmarks go I think the 955 is very UC'd. You can easily and completly stable run the multiplier up 3x to 4.26GHz as shown in THG review. This will wipe all those benchmarks out against the +4800 and I am sure the 955 will go even higher on my water cooled system. It will cost in electricity though not only to run the chip but to cool the house down in the summer. It looks like going with the regular 940 for $400 cheaper and EIST would be the better bargain but it is not the top end like I likey. I think I will just hold off until Q2-Q3 when the new video cards, new LL 1GB DDR2 modules, the 150GB Raptor, and Conroe appears. We should have an Intel board specifically for Conroe ATT.

Just thinking ahead, the Conroe will come in a few versions also. Initially there will probably be the 4MB cache introductory version followed by 2MB cache Allendale version and different clock rates. I think that the 4MB version of Conroe whether it has a 1066 or 1333 FSB is going to still be kinda hot. The 955EE has around 380 million transistors. If you knock off about 15 or more pipes that might knock it down to 250 million like the current Smithfield. What I am thinking is the Conroe is going to be on the same die size as Presler and have 4MB of cache. I don't think it will be as cool as we want it to be but hopefully I am wrong. It will be substantially lower clocked than current chips. I think the really cool chips would be the 2MB cache version. Just my $0.02.
