Intel DX58SO (Smackover)

I believe the official release date is mid-Nov. Plenty of cool pics on the web.

Re: Intel DX58SO (Smackover)

8 usb ports are nice but the board has no ps2 connections so you really are only getting 6 usb ports. It was only a matter of time before ps2 was dropped but ps2 works fine so why get rid of it. Sure is a nice looking board. The layout is different but after thinking about it why has no one does this before.

Re: Intel DX58SO (Smackover)

OK----I'm a bit puzzled by the layout.....

Someone tell me how this board makes ANY sense cooling wise....

I guess you can put fans anywhere.....

but with the natual air flow of most cases-----this layout makes no sense to me....

The vid card alone blocks natural air to one complete side of mosfets----and I hate the location of the North Bridge...the hardest and worst part of most cases to cool.

Yes----I understand you had the same problem with RAM....

Maybe its just me.....

Re: Intel DX58SO (Smackover)

Exhaust fans will have to draw air across the mobo, which is pretty much how it works in most cases today. The memory layout is great for airflow, since the slots are no longer perpendicular to it. Looks pretty good to me.

I'm surprised Intel hasn't gone for heat pipes for the MOSFETs. It would appear to me to be a solid technology at this point. Then they could have moved the ports more towards the top of the board and have the gap be used for an extended MOSFET/heat pipe heatsink (where the media connections are now).

Re: Intel DX58SO (Smackover)

Good point on the RAM being more in line with a natural flow----and it would be better for ALL sticks----not just the first stick that comes in contact with the natuarl flow of air----hadn't thought of it in that way

A large blow down CPU cooler is probably the way to go with this board....

Maybe a big Zalman or a Blue Orb 2...or a Thermalright SI 128 with a big 120mm fan on top....

Would probably do a nice job on the RAM and those Mosfets.

But the Northbridge is definitely going to need a fan unless unless all these low wattage boards coming out nowadays just don't heat up like the older ones....

Interesting.....

I'm reading some controversy about the i7 as well----radical---but is it all that powerful compared to what exists.....

Possibly a jump like C2D was.....

or not.....

But then again----the way the market is going right now-----my play days with computers may be done for a while......

Depends on case airflow, but newer cases with a couple of 120mm fans up front will work out well. There are plenty of RAM coolers on the market now-a-days, so it's not necessary for enthusiasts.

Lots of heat pipe arrangements s*ck - they just distribute heat amongst several components (NB, SB, MOSFETs, etc.) and increase overall temps. I'd rather just have good heatsinks on the on each component.

In any case, nice board! Though, what's with the 4th RAM slot - on on triple channel board.

Hey, what is that open stand that Coolaler is using - I didn't see it at JetArt

Re: Intel DX58SO (Smackover)

To me, this looks like the torch has been passed.

Very excited about this board (chipset).

Could never get excited about any board that didn't support ECC.
Thats one reason you haven't seen me in these forums in a while.

When Intel dropped ECC from the X48, I was worried that they were sacrificing reliability for the sake of gamer speed.

I was worried that one would be forced drop big bucks for a Xeon system to get peace of mind.

My appetite has been wetted.

Hi GW, good to see you agian.

Hopefully someone will dive into this board and post about it. I will be stuck in the DP45SG thread for quite a while.
