Question MB for Quad Overclocking?

I like the some of the P35 boards, some of which do better (higher FSB and lower NB temps) than most X38 boards. This would be for a Q6600 G0. Recommendations appreciated, especially those based on experience.

TY!

Re: MB for Quad Overclocking?

The Abit Ip35 Pro has good ratings and is used by quite a few folks over at Xtremesystems.org, but there are some quality issues heatsinks not being properly installed.

Come on guys - no Quad overclockers out there?

Re: MB for Quad Overclocking?

After the fiascos I went through with Abit's 875 garbage, I will never buy another of their boards. I just bought the same chip today, so I am interested in what you decide to do. Asus was my default choice, but their X38 boards seem to have a lot of BIOS issues.

Re: MB for Quad Overclocking?

Hi U-Mike!

A couple others I'm taking a look at would be the Asus P5K and the MSI P7N Platinum (nVidia i750). The MSI board hit an FSB of 470 on a Q6600 Overclock3D.Net :: Review :: MSI P7N SLI Platinum 750i based motherboard :: Test Setup & Overclocking.

I have the MSI P6N and like it except for it's overclocking ability (which is really limited by poor cooling of the i650 chip). For the Q6600, I'd be thriller with a 450MHz FSB, since that gives 3.6GHz and a Good G0 will be able to hit that.

Re: MB for Quad Overclocking?

DFI has some UT/LT P35 & X38 boards that are super overclockers - over $200 for the boards - but something to consider.

Re: MB for Quad Overclocking?

Yup. Take a look at the thread I started here: Please help me choose a new mobo for my Q6600. The DFI LANPARTY DK/LT X38-T2R boards are frontrunners for me right now. They look to be essentially the same board, except that with the DK the sound connections are on the back panel, while the LT has them on a breakout card. (There may be something else I'm missing, but it's still early...) They are pricey, though, but not out of line with the rest of these boards.

I was also thinking of the EVGA 780i board, but I don't think it's giving results as good as the DFI boards.

Re: MB for Quad Overclocking?

Well, I really like the The DFI LANPARTY LT P45-T2R, because it can hit really high FSBs with Quad CPUs (like the 9450, which only has an 8x multi). But I'm leaning towards the P7N Platinum:

a) By the time I need to upgrade, the Q9650 (not the QX) will like be cheap enough and it has a 9x multi.

b) It's a lot less expensive!

Re: MB for Quad Overclocking?

I was about to buy the DFI board this morning, but Newegg was up to its usual weekend pricing tricks. The nearly $2K worth of parts in my basket had increased in cost by more than 10% overnight (mobo itself went up by $20 plus shipping). They removed a bundle discount, jacked the prices on 4 items and eliminated free shipping on all but one. I was so ****** off that I tossed off an angry email and emptied my cart.

I shop that place almost exclusively, and I hate it when they jerk people like that. If the board was in stock at a decent price anywhere else, I'd buy it.

Sorry about your problem Mike.

Yeah, newegg used to be totally awesome. But now they are a big company, and act like most big companies - where the customer is really #2

They just p issed me off too. Yep. Price jerking.

Last weekend the part I wanted was $159 with free shipping. Monday it went to $169 with free shipping. I was going to buy it yesterday until I saw $199 plus ten for shipping!!! That makes their "new" price the most expensive of all the places I usually shop. Heck! I can now even get the part locally with sales tax at a cheaper price!

Re: MB for Quad Overclocking?

I've seen them change prices more than once in 24h. There's no way their costs are shifting that fast, so it's just dynamic pricing run amok. At any rate, if I see it someplace else, I'll order it. Ditto with the rest of the stuff.

Re: MB for Quad Overclocking?

Argh! I just got everything that I wanted in my basket last night. I was going to order this morning and the $30 instant rebate on my memory choice went away plus the price went up. I'm really getting POed at Newegg
