Thanks fvbounty. I'll check it out.

The forums I've been reading which have a lot of Rampage Extreme owners who use G.Skill RAM have been xtremesystems.org however for some reason those forums have been off line since Tuesday. I'll check out the Corsair forums. Corsair BTW is on the Asus vendor list.

Re: New Build: Asus X48 Rampage Formula

Trav -- Take a look at this link. Although the person was using a different memory, it sounds like a similar problem, which was resolved by upgrading to bios 0408 (possibly because that bios runs the northbridge at a higher default voltage). And in fact I see that 2 days ago Asus released 0410, which is described as "improving memory compatibility."

Edit: Here's a link that has the 0410 bios, which is not yet on the U.S. site:

But then when I put the drive back into its bracket: Just like before, read failure again. It seems this drive don't like the floppy drive bracket mount. Perhaps a change of brand is needed here. But ... WoW ... looks like I have a clue now to get passed the non-working floppy drive issue!

I think you will probably find that the floppy cable was connected to the header the wrong way around. Unlike on the mobo end, on the FDD end of the cable, there is no blanked out pin socket, simple mistake to make and seen it many times. It appears in windows ok because the FDD cable is connected to the mobo. Issue is when you try transferring data, it says the disk needs formatting, then cannot complete and errors.

Read post #101 of this thread, TigerStylus, and you will see the real reason there was a floppy problem. It was not the cable.

And, ...

Welcome to the ABX forums ... and I feel flattered that you joined and the first post you made was to help me with that floppy drive problem. Now, do you have any Rampage Formula and RAM tips?

I flashed the 0410 BIOS.

But I still get MemTest86+ errors. Not as many though. Before I got over 100, now I get about 20.

I wonder how the Reaper RAM would do now?

Re: New Build: Asus X48 Rampage Formula

Finally! Wow, you sure had to go through a lot of trouble and delay because Asus released a flawed bios.

It might not have been the prior BIOS. It might have been just me.

I now have the OCZ Reaper PC2 8500 RAM in the slots. And I now keep turning down the voltage on the RAM, the voltage on the Northbridge, and the voltage on the CPU now ... And I now keep getting zero errors with each time through MemTest86+ !!!!!!! I'm lovin' it!

I just put a mild overclock on my Q9450. Let's see what happens.

The Rampage Formula is now running the Q9450 2.66 at 3.2 and all the voltage settings are nowhere near the maximums.

Zero errors in MemTest86+ and zero errors after 6 hours of Prime95.

There is room for more.
