I'm in the process of following the steps on the first page of this thread, but had a couple of questions (all refer to XP Pro):

1) Under "Quick Steps," it mentions to install Universal Plug and Play. Is that installed during the OS installation or is this referring to Step 14 of "Let's Proceed"?

2) Under "Quick Steps," it says to install "any other desired Windows Services." Can someone tell me what Windows Services are?

3) During the OS installation, my CD came with Service Pack 1, which was installed. Does that already contain DirectX 9?

Thanks for any help.

1. Universal Plug and Play is not installed automatically by the OS. Its not a necessary component but it is useful. A description of UPnP and how to install it is in the Step by Step section of the Guide. A further discussion of UPnP can be found on other pages in this thread.

2. When I refer to additional services in the Quick Steps I am referring to additional Windows components which can be added through the Add/Remove Programs section of the Control Panel. As with your first question, additional information can be found in the Step by Step Procedure. None of the additional services are necessary, but as with UPnP they might be useful to some people

3. No, DirectX 9 is not on your disk

Thanks for the prompt reply.

Just one clarification, please:

Under Windows Services in Quick Steps, you have in parentheses (IIS, FAX). When you say "Fax," are your talking about a software program? (such as Win Fax?)

No

I am talking about Windows XP Fax. If you look at the add remove programs section of the Control Panel and then look at the Add Windows Components subsection, you will see the Fax Service there.

FWIW WinFax 10.02 is one program with which I and many other people have had horrible experiences. If you are thinking of using Winfax, Id enourage you to read some online customer reviews at www.cnet.com

Personally, I prefer using either Windows XP Fax or Faxtalk. (www.faxtalk.com)

Thanks for your patience. I am currently using WinFax 10, but will look into WinFax XP -- I had no idea it even existed.

No 'advanced settings' tab in my device manager

This is simply brilliant...i'm gonna try this tomorrow. But i am a bit concerned aboud step 9:

Quote:
Click Start Button. Then right click on My Computer and choose “Properties”. Then click the “Hardware Tab” and then the “Device Manager” button. Double click on "IDE ATA/ATAPI Devices" to expand the tree. Click on “Secondary IDE Channel” and then click the “Advanced Settings” tab. From the available drop down boxes choose “DMA if Available” for both devices. Then click OK to save and exit. Repeat these steps for “Primary IDE Channel” Once done, save and return to the desktop.
I do not have an 'advanced settings' tab...am i missing something?

If you are using XP and you currently do not see an advanced settings tab, its probably because at some point in your current installation you installed non Microsoft IDE drivers. (such as Intel IAA or VIA 4 in 1 drivers)

You cannot use the WIndows XP fax service with a broad band connection. Its simply a fax software interface. And as im sure you know direct point to point faxing is still done by way of telephone line. Therefore you would need to use an analog telephone dial up modem for fax.

Once you get the fax sevice installed and attempt to access it through the control panel I think you will ifnd the wizards and interface quite helpful and easy to use. If you run into any rpoblems that require idividual troublshooting or questions about your own configuration, please visit the Windows XP Fax newsgroup sponsored by Microsoft. The link to the newsgroup is below

http://communities.microsoft.com/New...wsxp.print_fax

If using a regular dial up modem is not possible there are internet based fax services such as e-fax. www.efax.com I have never used internet based faxing so you may want to read up on the costs and what service is best.

ANNOUNCEMENT

DirectX 9.0 + Sun Java + ATI Catalyst driver v3.1 = BSOD

Currently there is what appears to be a bug that interefers with Sun Java and Direct Draw when Catalyst 3.1 drivers are installed. One symptom is that when closing a java window you could get a BSOD or random reboot of your computer.

Pointreyes, myself, and a friend from another forum well versed in java are looking into the matter. I am currently testing two workaround fixes. Once P can confirm a solid fix is possible I will post the method in this thread. I hope to have more detail by Monday.

As many of you know Microsoft has, by court order, dropped its downloadable Java offering and removed it from the Windwos XP Service Pack. As such and as we move forward, there will likely be a slow migration of the masses to Sun Java. With such a migration and so man ATI cards out there, its important that this issue is addressed.

For now if you use DX9 and the latest ATI drivers I would recommend not installing the Sun Java Client. Hopefully a viable fix can be offered shortly.

--- This bug and possible fixes were discovered and offerd by other websites. But our own member, Pointreyes, was the first from AB to see this issue and begin looking into the matter. I appreciate the opportunity to work with him on this, so that together we can confirm a solid solution for the members of Asusboards.

Sun is stating on their website they are working to fix this bug. Registered members can read about it here: Link

Quick question and this maybe something I overlook.

Let say I am building a new system from scratch. I get everything installed and now I am ready to install the OS.

When using XP or 2000 and I insert the Windows CD and when I am asked to Partition and Format the hard drive.

Why does Setup give the hard drive the next drive letter after the other installed drives?

For emaple I have a floppy that is A:, Dvd would be assigned to C:, CD-rw to D: and the hard drive to G: (which I would rather have at C).

Thanks,

Bill

Bill, if you want your hard drive partitions to appear first and consecutively before the letters begin for the optical drives, there is a little trick I stumbled onto

The next time you set Windows up, make sure you have 100% partition free blank drives - wipe all partitions off. Then when you get to the place int he blue setup screens before Widnows installs, try this.

From the blue setup screen where you can set up partitions:
Set up a single partition on any drive you have. Then once you set up that first partition, follow the instrucions on the screen to dlelete that partition you just created. Now recreate it again and create any other hard drive partitions you want. You do not reboot between any of these steps.

For some reason, creating a primary partition, then deleting it, then recreating it will put all the hard drive letters in succession and the optical drives at the end.

HTH
