P4C800E Deluxe Promise Controller?

Will the Promise controller on a P4C800E Deluxe support a single SATA drive or do I have to run it in a RAID configeration? I want to use my Raptors directly off of the ICH5R southbridge so I can boot from them. My problem is that I use a single SATA drive for all of my Acronis back-ups, if I have to run it in RAID I'll have to buy another drive. I really prefer not too.

It supports either single drives or raid configurations. You just have to use the correct drivers - the single drive and raid ones are different.

I have a similar question. I have one IDE hard drive connceted to the Promise controller. I have the Promise controller set to IDE mode in the bios.

Can I add one SATA drive to the Promise controller and keep my IDE drive connected as it is? I don't want to run them as a RAID pair or anything, just as two seperate drives.

Are their any configuration changes I'd need to make or can I just plug in the SATA drive and both would be recognized?

Thanks,
Matt

No, unfortunately. Once a Raid 0 array is "lost", it is gone permanently and irretrievably. That's why it is imperative to have current and frequent backups of any critical files you maintain on a Raid 0 array. BTW, you have to have 2 drives to Raid 0, what happened to the other drive? You only mention one drive. Dead?

hey pcbruiser thanks for the quick reply. maybe i was set up correctly in the biggining because it worked fine for about 6 months then all of a sudden i got a no bios installed error at boot. at first i could get into the fasttrack controller page and rebuild without losing data but then it would be gone again. but now i cant seem to get into that page. control f dosent seem to work.any suggestions. most everthing on the drive has been saved elswhere except for a few pictures. im trying to save those and then start over with a clean install of everything. thanks again.

You say you had RAID 0, but it seems that you're saying there is only one hard drive

Hummm, sounds more like the Promise controller on the board hs died than the array itself. If the board is still under warrantee, I would strongly consider an RMA. If you go that route, mark the two drives as to how they were connected to the controller. Then connect them to the fixed board the same way, and you might find the array is stillthere. I actrually changed from a P4C800E-D to an A8V, both of which have the same Promise controller on-board, and the A8V saw the old array created on the P4C800E-D immediately.

And, please clarify, you did have 2 drives didn't you because you can't physically create a Raid array with a single physical drive, and you wouldn't want to anyway even if you could somehow manage to fool the controller into letting you do that.

If you only had one drive there was no Raid array. It should be formated like any regular IDE or SATA drive (NTFS, I assume, if you were using W2K or XP). Move the drive to either an IDE channel or SATA if that's what it is, and that may be all that is needed if the Promise controller has failed. Of course, the drive may have also been corrupted if the controller failed. But, physically the drive may be fine, and if you are lucky, you may actually not have lost anything at all.

If the Promise controller has failed, the other SATA plug on that controller probably won't work either. You may be stuck since you have used the other SATA lines on the board.

You can enter your configuration as your signature using the UserCP link near the top of every page.
