POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS FOR P4S8X PROBLEMS

SEC_IDE is dead!
(u connect anything to the secondary IDE port and it's not recognized in BIOS, "doesn't work")
that's an easy one, do not connect 9-th header (NC) from front USB ports of the case.
No need to yell BINGO!

No drive attached to FastTrack Controller. Bios is not installed.
another easy one.
for some reason bios developers decided to enable by default Promise Fast Track 376 controller used for RAID. Vast majority of users don't use raid (at least at first) - and then bios tells them "i am not istalled!". Freaked me out first time i saw that.
go into BIOS - Advanced - PCI Configuration - Onboard ATA device - [Disabled]
u can yell BINGO! , but not too loud.

constant beeps when gaming (or running graphic-stressing bench)
Most likely cause is that psu has low +3.3v line (bad psu). Other possible cause is overheating, check the temps with Asusprobe or any other monitoring utility.
Have you considered yelling BINGO! today?

Possibly bad PSU
Not much u can do here, except check if your PSU is giving enough juice (see PSU section below) and try a diff. one or try the dual- PSU mod.
Only yelling BINGO! can insure lasting positive results.

Possibly bad RAM
Check for RAM errors with MEMTEST86. (i usually select All Tests, takes 35-40 minutes per 512MB to do 1 loop and leave it running overnight. But that's just my personal preference). If it will show latsa errors, yell BINGO! and:
- try more relaxed (slower, higher numbers) RAM timings and\or higher vDIMM.
- try to check each stick individually if both (or 3 that u have) show err's in MEMTEST86, systems r more stable with single stick of RAM.
- try moving RAM to a diff. slot, seems that some RAM slots perform better than others.
- try to lower RAM's speed by using dividers. That is if u r willing to significantly slow your RAM down.
If all that won't help - u got bad\incompatible RAM. My recommendation is to curse ANUS INC. out loud and get a diff. stick of RAM. (Note: having asus-approved RAM does not guaranty compatibility and error-free performance. Their list of approved RAM is for recreational use only)

Possibly bad on-board sound
If using on-board sound, turn down or off sound hardware acceleration: Control Panel - Sounds and Multimedia - tab Audio - Sound Playback Advanced - Performance - Hardware Acceleration slider move to the left.
Or try a sound card.
If it fixes stuttering in games or improves performance in any way, don't forget to yell BINGO! , otherwise your success shall be temporary.

Possibly bad voltage regulation
Do not use AUTO, set all voltages manually in BIOS, some people suggest to lowest possible level (for non-overclocked rigs, of course).
Guess the word of the day and yell it.

"... how to connect ide hdd to fast track controller..."
only 1 hdd can be connected to parallel ata133 with a regular ide cable, 2-nd hdd HAS TO BE CONNECTED to Serial ATA and for that u'll need a pata-sata(ide-serial ata) adapter(converter).

HighPoint RocketHead 100 , Asus SATA Dongle (scroll down) , SIIG's SC-SATA12 , Syba SATA to IDE Dongle Converter
IWILL I2S IDE to Serial ATA adapter
whole bunch on pricewatch

"...Does the 2 drives needs to be the exactly the same?..."
No.
In testing i used 2 OLD hdd's, one 2G and other 8G, different manufacturers too.
It's important to have same capacity and speed only because u'll lose extra gigs of the larger hdd and extra speed of faster one.

ON A LIGHTER NOTE

crash-free bios? FYI: that never worked, in case u wonder
yeah, "...after a few clicks on the keyboard..." - just put mouse on the keyboard and click few times
"...Many users, however, still has ..."
"...failed attempt could wipe out their systems, leading to wasting their hard earned bucks on a new BIOS."

ASUS Knowledge Base (in the members area, i think)
"...We apologize for any inconvienance..."
"...Some recommandated sites to visit:..."

"...What sure we care..." this page is full of gems, such as:
"...What sure we care when install Adaptec ISA AHA-1542 SCSI card..."
"...3.(Advanced Feature) and then choose command option 2.(Update BIOS Including Boot Block and ESCD) to load new BIOS into FLASH EPROM. Otherwise choose command option 2. ..."
"...How to using Flash program?..."
"...please note that updating your system BIOS is serious, only update when you need to do it.
Un-necessary updating cause malfunction of the system are not cover within the warranty..."
"...Warning ! Select the wrong BIOS files, will cause wrong updating to the FLASH EPROM..."
"...How we can do when checksum error?..."
"...save and exit in order for the checksum to load correctly..."
"...What is this mysterious "PCI CARD" in Win95?..."
i personally like this one:
"...ROM checksum error mean the BIOS has been re-programming..."
"...Please to re-programming or replacement the EPROM by your local dealer..."

(interestingly, the link says "Customer Feedback", but look at the name of the htm page - THEY KNOW what's it going to be!)
