| With the CD inserted, I either get the configmg error or I get safe mode with no optical drives. Same as when I tried from a floppy DOS boot (with and without CD support). Is there something blocking windows from recognizing the drives listed in the BIOS? Remember--cannot annd new hardware from safemode.

| Sounds like you're not booting off the CD. Make sure in the BIOS that your boot order is set to CD-ROM, then Hard Drive. You should get a prompt when the computer starts up telling you to press a key to boot off the CD. Endaar |

| That was an error on my part. From last time system defaulted to base boot settings the hard drive was ahead of the CD. Fixed order. Saved bios and continued boot. went to safe mode with no optical drives. rebooted. Got menu choices: 1 Normal boot, 2 Logged Boot, 3 Safe mode, 4 Step by Step, 5 Command prompt only and 6 Safe mode with commandprompt only. Tried both normal --defaulted to safe mode and safe mode. Neither boot had access to optical drives. Tried command prompt but the drives where optical should be located return "invalid Drive" msg

| You are not booting off the CD. At this point, I'm not sure why, unless you have something other than a standard Windows disc. Are you getting any messages about there being a bootable CD in the drive? Endaar |

| Pull out one of those sticks of RAM until you get Win98 installed. Win98 will protection fault with 1 gig or more of RAM. Once you get Win98 installed, there are some tweaks you can use to introduce the additional 512MBs. See here.

| Thanks, but I cut back to 512 RAM total when I first had problems that were not solved by the posting I referenced in Msg 1. Sorry if I wasn't clear on this. Since no other suggestions have come up. I am proceeding with removing all PCI cards, and cutting back to a foppy drive, one optical drive and one hard drive, and leaving one 512 RAM unit.

| Cut back to 1 optical drive and make sure windows cd is in that drive. It sounds like it is looking in the wrong optical drive then going to the hard drive. If the bios finds a bootable windows cd it should start set up from there and never get to safe mode or the list of choices that includes safe mode. The bios will only look in one optical drive for a bootable cd. If it does not find a bootable cd in that optical drive it will go to the hard drive or whatever else is next in the boot order. |

| Success After removing all PCI cards, and cutting back to a foppy drive, one optical drive and leaving one 512 RAM unit, I installed one clean formatted/s 40GB WD harddrive. Reconnected to AC power. Put my bootup floppy with OAK CD drivers in A and hit the powerbutton. As soon as the optical drive was powered. I put the Win 98 install disc in the optical drive. I got the menu choice of startup w/wo CD. Selected w CD. Now installing WIN 98. Looks to be successful. Thanks much for all the advice. The discussion primed my thinking even if a particular approach was unsuccessful. Great site. Helpful members. Thanks again. My next step (tomorrow) will be to go the the WIN NT,2000,XP forum to learn more about dual boot systems. I know a number of my often used programs will not install under XP, and are not available as XP compatible updates but I need the XP features for my newest programs. Bye ![]()
