| 2 Port Ethernet Hub? Hi Does anyone know if there is a smaller valid alternative to a 4Port Hub? I need to get two network connections upstairs in my home and don't want to pull two cables. On the other hand putting a 4 port hub/switch upstairs just to have two network connections seems a bit overkill to me. Ok not really, but it would be cool if there would be some kind of more compact and efficient solution for this. Practically, i have 3 computers downstairs connected through a 5 Port gigabit switch. 3 Ports are obviously occupied, the fourth is used for the ADSL router and the last is the one i need to bring upstairs, but i somehow need to split that cable to get two connections upstairs. Any ideas? ![]()

| Re: 2 Port Ethernet Hub? You realize that with a hub, you will need 3 ports? One in and two out?

| Re: 2 Port Ethernet Hub? They dont make anything smaller then a 4port. Netgear and dlink make some nice small hub/switchs. |

| Re: 2 Port Ethernet Hub? So your going to have 2 computers pluged into port 1 and 2. Then you'll need a cable in port 3 as a uplink from your router for the internet. |

| Re: 2 Port Ethernet Hub? I've attached an image of my current network layout. PC4 is the new computer that will join the network in a few weeks (at least i hope so). Actually i will replace PC1 (my current rig) with a new one and the current PC1 will become PC4. Anyways all i want is put a wired connection upstairs, i was hoping in some nice little Y shaped hub, that would have saved a lot of space and required me to pull a single cable. I knew it would be near to impossible to find something like that, but you never know! In the end a 4Port hub will work just fine. ![]()

| you can split a standard ethernet cable to 2 100mb ports. With 100mb ethernet you have 2 pairs of wire used, 2 pairty, and 2 data. Cat 5 has 4 pairs of wire. You have to put 2 males on one end, and 2 females ont he other, but it will work. Personally, I'd rather run 2 cables in case you want gigabit later to both machines and don't want to add a switch.. It would cost less to run a hub, or 2 cables than buy the stuff to split it though. Plus if you ever want to add another device upstairs, you're set. I dunno, hubs are CHEAP. You can get a 10mb linksys, and 2 nics for $10 from MCM electronics with cables! Network Starter Kit - 5 Port Hub and 2 PCI Cards : NET-LICNHB105 |
