| 3com router starting to crap out More and more I've and my roommate have been getting 'a network cable has been unplugged' messages that seem to emanate from the router. The router just does not like a lot of connected devices. It also does not play well with the Xbox360. I have not bothered to look at the state of home routers and gateways for a long time; I just need something that can handle bittorrent traffic and lots of ins/outs without puking, and Wireless G. My first inclination is the tried and true Linksys WRT54G, since I had one in the past that worked well, however I'm clueless as to which revision would be the preferred one (router makers have a bad habit of fixing bugs but cheaping out their equipment on every revision.) |

| Re: 3com router starting to crap out If you've got a spare, older computer lying about, you could always give one of the linux-based router distributions a go - i've used Smoothwall, and it's been brilliant so far! (by older, I mean at least a Pentium 2 - I'm running a P2 233Mhz, 160meg ram, 3gb HDD, two 100Mbit network cards, and it's easily handling whatever I throw at it) |

| Re: 3com router starting to crap out No spare comp, plus I need the compactness of a wall mountable router. Thanks for the suggestion though. |

| I have one of two wireless routers I'm reviewing at the moment for a WLAN project I'm working on. The signal needs to propagate at a decent strength for 100 yards. So the Pre-N may be the router to meet my customer's requirements. Linksys WRT54GL Belkin Pre-N The Linksys has good reviews on several sites as they always do, but when compared in the long-range testing, it comes in last place. Stay away from Linksys Pre-N routers. They are not ready for consumers. When an electrical engineer with years of experience states to Stay Away... I tend to follow their advice. For the Belkin, the buyer needs to be aware! If you purchase one, get the 1xxx version... DO NOT BUY THE 2xxx version... As for its capabilities, it scores high in most tests, and it has the best long range scoring compared to two Linksys models, and two Netgear models. Personally, I have never liked Belkin simply because I got one of those constantly disconnecting POS routers. The only fix for it was to completely disable all security. From encryption to mac mapping. Then it worked fine... ![]() I believe I will get the Belkin for this project. They need the range, and all other Pre-N routers I review have horror stories just as the Belkin does. At least the Belkin has a solution for the problem! Hope It Helps! Vince
