Analog Modems: V.92 and V.44

For those who still have analog modems: there seems to be new standards coming:

V.92 as successor of V.90 (upload 44 kbps instead of 33.6 kbps)
V.44 as sucssessor of V.44 (compression 20-60% better).

Also handshaking time will be cut by half!

See:

Sorry:

V.44 as sucssessor of V.44 (compression 20-60% better).

should read: V.44 as sucssessor of V.42bis (compression 20-60% better). V.42bis

The biggest problem would appear that most ISP's aren't interested in this update.
On the plus side we don't have two sets of people competing for the one standard.
On the downside, a lot of modems that were 'flash update ready' are not accepting the new V92 upgrades.
Results in ISP's having to replace all their modems for a relatively small increase in connection speeds.
Sure there will be ISP's that upgrade, but it unfortunately isn't going to be as wide-spread as V90 is now.

I've checked a couple of time now with USR and only a fraction of their modems are upgradable as of this moment. I have a Courier modem and these will be the last ones to be upgraded. I guess, by then I am on cable.
