| Re: Build a network attached storage device If only it could be a print server as well ... I did play around with mine awhile back by plugging in a HP 940C into the FreeNAS. On boot I noticed that it can see the printer on boot but there is no way to configure it using the web interface. Can't see it on the network either ...

| Re: Build a network attached storage device This might be a solution ... In 2007, anyone, and I mean anyone, can set up a computer to work as a simple file server with Linux and Samba. Command line? We don't need no stinkin' command line! Here's how. Who needs Windows Home Server with Linux around?

| Re: Build a network attached storage device I'm not looking for a server/gateway/firewall/whatever else it does, not to mention a MUCH larger footprint. That "extra functionality" that I don't want will just take up more space. And it has MUCH higher hardware requirements to run. I've heard good things about ClarkConnect but it serves a different prupose.

| Re: Build a network attached storage device Found something interesting ... RESTORE was developed by Holonyx Ruffdogs and is a free, open source, enterprise network backup and recovery solution for Windows, Novell, Mac OS X (data fork), Unix and Linux systems. RESTORE is scalable to a complete backup solution for multiple workstations, servers, and data centers. More here ... Welcome to the RESTORE Website Review here ... | Re: Build a network attached storage device New stable versions of FreeNAS were released last week. "LiveCD" is the new name of the old "ISO" => This release is started from a CDROM, and create a RAM drive for FreeNAS (only one read access during startup), and use a MS DOS (FAT) formatted floppy disk or USB key for saving the configuration file. "Embedded" is the new name of the old "Generic-pc". => This release, installed on an hard drive or on a flash device, use a RAM drive (like the LiveCD) for limiting access to a flash devise. But it write the configuration on the flash device. FreeNAS: The Free NAS Server Manual here ... http://www.freenas.org/downloads/doc...reeNAS-SUG.pdf If only they would integrate a print server ...

| Re: Build a network attached storage device I've gotten somewhat frustrated with FreeNAS's continuous switches between different media server solutions. I'm still using .686.0 (I think) because I know it supports streaming to my PS3. A later version switched to MediaTomb which did not. And they're using another different one now, which is supposed to support the PS3, but all the changes kinda worry me. Makes me nervous about upgrading.

| Re: Build a network attached storage device I'm still running .68 from over a year ago. It's the only network device which has never failed me, it's always available. However, I really need a solution that includes a print server ...

| Re: Build a network attached storage device A copy of OpenSolaris and ~30 minutes of time to read a ZFS tutorial is all you need. |

Some of the printers don't have linux support. The problem with the 30 mins to read is that it becomes 30 mins intervals as it usually turns into a quest. Not in the mood ... I'm all quested out at the moment .

| Re: Build a network attached storage device If you can't pickup ZFS in under 30 minutes, then you probably have no business building a NAS box. It's that simple. |
