Arrow Can you ID this hardware ?

Here are some pics >>>>>
(I haven't posted here in 3 years, so the forum won't yet let me post links... ....so add the four letters " http " to the front of these unfinished links, when pasting them into your web browser.)

(processors are mounted/sandwiched under the board, using the case as a heatsink)

I bought this for $10 at a surplus store. The guy selling it said he cabled it up, put in some memory, powered it up....the screen said that there was no hard drive, that's it.
I will try it myself, when I get the appropriate cables and some memory. Maybe I can get into the bios?

What do you think it's purpose is/was ?
Ethernet controller or ???

Type of hard drive ??

Any suggestions are appreciated.

It sure looks like an entire pc to me...

Keep us posted - especially if you see anything on the monitor.

Re: Can you ID this hardware ?

Did you try plugging it in? It looks like some kind of server communication node.

Re: Can you ID this hardware ?

Looks to be a network terminal for a cash register of some kind.

Re: Can you ID this hardware ?

What you have is the enclosure for what appears to be a small computer. That circuit board is just a backpane with power circuitry and ports... The actual CPU was presumably on another board attached to that large 30x4 socket on the left side. Also an IDE connector for a harddrive, some RAM slots, and some kind of card slot, probably never used but there for debugging.

Not much you can do with this unless you can find a model number somewhere (could be printed on the circuit board, maybe even on the bottom) and find the board with the CPU.

Also, the CPU might be on the backside of this circuitboard. If so, then you should try plugging in a windows XP harddrive and see what happens.

I remember seeing something like this. I just can't remeber what it was.

It could be an industrial PC.

I agree. If it uses the aluminum case as a heatsink it can't be a very high end computer since it would heat up very fast with a high speed cpu. Something like a cash register terminal could be very possible. The lack of fan would make it quiet too, which puts even more in the retail setting in my eyes.

In the last picture you can see the battery for the CMOS is missing. It looks like maybe the bios chip is next to it. Can't read the name though.

Re: Can you ID this hardware ?

Looks like a thin client to me.

Kinda PC (with no or embedded OS) connected via LAN to a Server which hosts the OS and the applications.

Ah, thanks to wikipedia, here's a nice description for thin clients.

Greetings

Dru

P.S.:the two stickers with 00:14:0B:20:06:8C (8D) are telling you the mac-addresses of the thing. The 00-14-0B tell us that it'S from FIRST INTERNATIONAL COMPUTER, INC..
Maybe you have something like this?

Re: Can you ID this hardware ?

That's actually something I've seen before--it's a video (or audio, I can't remember now but I'm pretty sure it was video) editor. I had to fix one for a guy once that did video editing on it, but that's solely what it was for--they're kind of old, I think...

I'm not sure if that's exactly what it is, but that's exactly what the thing I worked on looked like, except the one I fixed had a hard drive.
