ClarkConnect usage scenario.

Hi there,

Right now I run Smoothwall Express 2.0 on an old machine. The network diagram is attached, and you'll see that it's my internet gateway and firewall.

I've just bought a Dell Poweredge 350 server, which I intend to use instead of the smoothwall. I want to use Clark Connect on this server so that I can use the additional features.

My question is: What version of ClarkConnect do I need to have? If I have the "gateway" version, do I still get the mailserver and php/dev features?

The Community Edition is the only free editon so im not sure if you want to spend money on the others.

Thanks for the fast reply.

The problem is, the website doesn't say where the box will go on the network.. will it sit between the internet and the clients, or sit behind another router?

Depends on how you set it up. I had mine running as a router, so it goes cable or dsl modem, ClarkConnect, then switch or another router to clients.

That's how I want mine set up.

Just to clarify:

Internet -> ADSL Router -> ClarkConnect -> Switch -> Clients

In this scenario, can I still utilise the print server, web, traffic shaping, and mail server features?

Also, can I install standard packages (erm, for example, subversion) onto the box?

You can use all those options as needed, it will ask you what packages you want to install. You'll also get the option to download more packages for future upgrades or add on's.

I have been running CC for a while now. Though the old thread is good, it is based mainly on the 2.x versions. A lot has changed since then. I will be glad to help with any new questions.

Community edition is the only free edition as said before. The main difference between the free one is limited to 10 mailboxes. They dumped the gateway edition only a long time ago. What you do now is only install the features you want. You can make it pretty much like smoothwall by only installing the firewall, for example.

Thanks for your help, you've both made it clear what I can do with the software . Although I love smoothwall, there seems no reason to run that over CC, apart from that SW can run on an aincent machine.

Clarkconnects usage requirements are rising. I have it running fine on a celeron 900MHz with 512Mb or RAM, though.

I believe smoothwall and clarkconnect use the same or similar firewall modules anyway.

I actually don't use any of those modules. I tried them, but not for any period of time.

A highly recommended piece of software is WinSCP :: Free SFTP and FTP client for Windows. Great to get into the CC box from your own.
