| Re: Help with virtual private network (VPN) connection Now you runderstand why I like simple. It is now step by step to make sure all the ts are crossed and Is are doted. Do you have firewall on both machines. Have you enabled access for the 65.xx.xx.xx Ip. Have you created a user id for the host sytem to login with.Have you enabled remote access for the host system. Have you verified all the VNC parms are correct for your systems. Have you got the correct host and client set up on the appropriate systems. HAve you tried to ping the host ip from the system that is trying to access it. Basically lot of checking and double checking. Might also try the UntraVNC forums to see if you can get any more info from someelse who ahd the same issues.

| Re: Help with virtual private network (VPN) connection I created a doc that contain all the info in the ref doc icluding the img files. If you PM with your email address I can send you the doc so you can readily read thur it at home and at work. The doc states that if all you want to do is access files upload and download you can accoplish this better and more easily with FTP.

| Re: Help with virtual private network (VPN) connection Bless you brother for preaching the light. Amen. Althought yamawho hasn't yet said he is trying to setup VPN. He is just trying to use VNC along with remote desktop support. BTW you don't need VNC to use Remote desktop support. I would suggest if you really want to do Remote desktop support just for file transfer. Try one of the pieces of software I suggested and from there get more complex.

| Re: Help with virtual private network (VPN) connection I'm trying to get it to work out of the box before turning to third party apps. The host is running win XP Pro BTW. I am able to connect to the host system without issues from other systems on the LAN. This is why I suspect the router ... or firewall as you suggested but I did check this before and it does work on the LAN. I noticed that the WAN IP is different from the host IP, I tried both, no joy. The IP is switching so by the time I get to work it's different. I just checked the router WAN IP and it's changed from this morning. I don't have the static IP option on my account, is this required for this to work ? Here is a pic from the router setup ...

| Re: Help with virtual private network (VPN) connection When you say LAN it is the intranet. This is different from athe WAn accessyou are trying from work. The firewall and the router stand in between when accessing from the work system. As far as static Ips yes this would make it easier because the ip wouldn't change. There are ways around not having staic IPs. they are documented in the beginers doc/ I have never successfully tested MS remote desktop support outside of a Lan environment. I have not used VNC. I have used as you call it third party free software and it has worked every time it took 2 mins with my brother and it took a little longer with my client in montana to be up and running from the time they downloaded and installed the software, Never longer than 5 mins till I was accessing and controlling theuir system /or ftp files. Your choice.

| Re: Help with virtual private network (VPN) connection Not all routers support VPN so you'll want to check that. Some Wan companies block network traffic like that. |

| Re: Help with virtual private network (VPN) connection I may be a bit late and missing something, but this method worked for me. Goto no-ip.com or ddns.org and setup a dynamic dns account. Download the application to monitor your IP or setup your router to work with DDNS.org. Configure MS Remote Desktop to work on a specific available port. Setup your DDNS account to work on that port. Goto Open Port Check Tool and test the port. If failure occurs, Port Forward that specific port. Test at canyouseeme again. It should work after forwarding. Now, once at work, you can type in the http:// address in Remote desktop with the port number (http://myurl.no-ip.com:####), and you should acquire the connection. *** You may not have to enter the Port number in the URL if you setup your account correctly...*** This did work for me over a DSL and a Satellite connection... Hope It Helps!

| Re: Help with virtual private network (VPN) connection Turns out winfax pro has not been releasing the modem after receiving a fax causing the phone line to be off the hook again all day. Installed fax console in XP and will be testing this for a few days to see if I can get trouble free operation. At this point I need to settle the fax issue first before going forward. One interesting thing I noticed when setting up the fax console is that you have an option to have a copy of each fax saved to a folder of your choice. I made a folder in a shared folder so now I can check faxes on the LAN without using remote desktop. I really need to learn more about this networking stuff ... it's really cool Once I get all this working, I plan to build a low power mini itx system based on Intel's new D201GLY2 motherboard to takeover shown here ... Intel® Desktop Board D201GLY2 Overview I ordered one last week for 66$ cdn and the delivery should be about two weeks away. If this works I plan to build more for other tasks.
