I've had it for about the last 16 months. You're right it is great. I can never go back to dial-up. Although a little pricey.

I hear ya, Cryogen

I won't even consider living anywhere where DSL isn't available. I've had it for 2.5 years or so.

Miles,
Congratulations!
The need for speed is wonderful, now if the price would drop or the performance increase according to Moore's law I'd be set. Enjoy the performance gains.
I can see you now like the guy in the Maxell ad sitting in front the speaker/computer!

more than 2 years after you passed 1.4 mbit I now have had a line upgrade from 1mbit to 2 mbit down!!

I can still feel the adrenaline going thru my body when I first hit a website with my ADSL connection (nov 2002)....

Doing around 220 k/s now so that will be enough for the next couple of months....

When I lived in Santa Clara, CA (Silicon Valley) and cable modems first came out I thought for sure I'd be able to get it. NOPE!

People in Kansas could get it, but us geeks in CA were out of luck. I moved back home to Illinois in 1998 and finally got my cable modem in 2003.

What should I get my hopes up for the next 5 years?

The race for quality has no finish line- so technically, it's more like a death march.

$173 per month in Pacific Northwest area.

I just upgraded from 256 to 640Kbps because the price has gone down in my area; however, I still have to pay $46 per month to have 640. 640 happens to be the fastest speed I can get in my area as well.

General comment about what I'm seeing with prices in the U.S. - I'm amazed at the huge variability! Some areas almost seem reasonable, but pointreyes' suggestion is outrageous!

Guess when one company has a monopoly in an area, they really stick it to you guys.

In Canada we have a "national" DSL ISP - Bell Canada/telus/Aliant/etc. You can get DSL in the smallest little towns (even here!) And AFAIK, prices are CONSISTENT throughout the country. Prices didn't seem that great to me, but compared to what you guys in the States are paying they're actually pretty good:

- light, 128 kbps download, $29.99/month
- regular, 1.5 Mbps download, $44.95/month
- ultra, 3 Mbps download, $69.95/month

So download speeds are slower but costs are much lower. This is in Canadian dollars, which is ~77 cents U.S.

On top of that, most regions have a competing cable internet service. In my area, this is the winner:

- light, 512 kbps download, $24.99/month <- this is what I have
- regular, 1.5 Mbps download, $41.99/month
- regular no-cap, 1.5 Mbps download, $46.99/month

In general, Canada seems to have lower download speeds as well as the widespread use of bandwidth caps, but at a much lower price.
