| Intel PRO/1000 NIC Intel is planning to introduce affordable Gigabit ethernet cards. You can purchase an "evaluation" version of the card for $99. Check it out: http://www.intel.com/network/go/desktop_gig/index.htm

| Ranger drools... Cool. Now all we need is affordable gigabit switches. The cheapest I've seen is around $850 for a four port model. Anybody seen anything cheaper? |

| Hi Ranger, tell me more about that Giga Switch. What's the brand? Netgear? Which model? I am VERY interested in this Gigabit (copper) technology. |

| So who really needs a gigabit network? Certainly not 99% of the home user market... Only those who want to brag about their NIC... Since nobody can even come close to using up the 100 megabits their current network cards afford them...

| You're absolutely right! They just throw products on the market which we don't need! You believe it? Who said once that 64 Kbyte was enough memory? Billy the Kid, now called Bill Gates. |

| Most users have a single PC connected to the Internet. Guess what? All we need is a 10 megabit card for this! Where 1000 gigabit will be useful is in highly specialized networking areas... Home users will not need this type of speed for decades.

| Yup, we really don't need that kind of speed, but "Need" has nothing to do with it!! It's just like a lot of the other unnecessary computer stuff we all blow our money on. If I had big bucks I'd be running fiber at my place. Just because I could. It was a Netgear that I saw. I haven't looked much into its stats yet. http://www.us.buy.com/retail/product...0701&loc=14617 For this price, I can wait. They will be useful for large LAN parties, though... |
