Just got a cable modem, a Linksys 4-Port Router and am using Linksys NICs in both my machines. I don't have any problems using TCP/IP and getting on the NET with either/both machines. The problem is when I want to Network Games between my machines (LAN) which default to the IPX/SPX Protocol. I managed to figure out that the network works if I turn off the Cable Modem. If I leave the modem on, the person wanting to join a game cannot see the host computer. Any suggestions? Are there settings in the IPX/SPX properties that need to be changed from the default settings? Help. This is not critical but annoying and I'd like to solve it or understand it at worst.

In Novell networks, you need to make sure that all computers are using the same frame type. There should be a setting in IPX/SPX properties under networking on each computer. You will probably have a choice between 802.2 or 802.3. It doesn't matter which one you use, as long as all computers use the same one. This may not be your problem, as it doesn't explain why the network works while your cable modem is off. You may also want to check for any frame type settings on the Linysys router. I haven't used Novell in years so I'm kind of reaching. I hope this helps.

Sorry about not giving the OS, I'm using Win98SE. I checked and there is no option to enable IPX over TCP or vice versa. Both protocols have an option to enable NETBIOS over either of the protocols. The frame rate on both computers is set to auto. There is no option for a specific frame rate, I guess I would have to type one in. Thanks, I might have to resort to just turning off the modem.

Firewall? It could be that the problem with you gaming and router is that with it on, there is firewall causing problem. I have an SMC router and I have to go into setup and configure a port in the section called virutal networking. I don't know where it would be at on a Lynksys unit. But for example, I have to set a service port of 113 so that I may use IRC chat servers.

This may be related to a similar problem that I had with IPX and Laplink under Windows 98SE. This is a known issue with Microsoft and you can find it in their knowledge base under article Q243199. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/support and search for the above article. G2CK
