| I read on motorola's website that the netopia 2210 DSL modem/gateway has some neat features. It supposedly has an SPI firewall, port forwarding capabilities. Now when I go into the configuration page, the only options I get are to have public or private IP addresses, and whether to have the PPPoE on the puter, or the modem, or bridge mode. NOTHING for internal network configuration, firewall, or port forwarding! Now from what I was able to figure out is the firmware is tweaked by your ISP to their specs. It appears they've decided to cripple the modem, allowing you to only have 1 DHCP lease, or turn it into a bridge so you use your own router! WHY would they do something so STUPID when those options don't cost a DIME??? You can use multiple puters with the modem by plugging it into a switch, and setting the IPs manually on the inside of the network. This is what I've done for now, and it works OK. I'd just like to get into the firewall to configure it. Now, does anybody know how to mod the firmware on this thing??? How do the ISPs configure the firmware to their specs??? I'd assume they get some sort of config utility from motorola, and it allows them to add, and subtract options as they see fit. Maybe if I can get a copy of the firmware, and possibly somebody that knows what they're doing with a hex editor, I can make my own firmware. I dunno, maybe I'll just get a router, and use it as a bridge. Thanks AT&T for turning a nice modem into a rinky dink, useless, turd!!! |

| Re: Motorola netopia 2210 restricted firmware??? I bet they also disabled any feature that would allow you to update and/or flash with new firmware too...

| Re: Motorola netopia 2210 restricted firmware??? You can update the firmware. With m luck is they've made some sort of protection system to make sure it's a genuine AT&T firmware. I was hoping some other company would use this modem, possibly with better firmware options, and I use their firmware. My other option is to get the D-link 4 port gamer lounge gigabit router. It would give me gigabit networking in the house. Are there any other giga routers out there besides the linksys in the $150> range??? The linksys seems to have some bugs, so I'd like to avoid it. |
