| Thanks buddies for that info.. Gareth, I don't think think I have anything to choose. There is only one provider in our town and regarding innovation we are in the stone age compared to Australia and the US. But thanks for that detailed info. My head is starting to spin.. I'll just wait and see what happens overhere. I'll defenitely not go for any USB modems like you suggested (and tomp). EDIT:>>> Yeah... forget to mention it: Ozzie, I love that GIF.. Gimme' some more!!

| SZ, I just read your post, and having just installed the ADSL stuff and living in the same stoneaged country, I can give you the following advise: don't use the USB modem but the the ethernet modem. ( probably Alcatel). A little bit more difficult to install but a lot less problems afterward. Check the following (dutch sites):http://www.adsl-online.net/index_normal.shtml ;http://www.mordax.nl/ Any questions left about local ADSL problems just ask me. Mariner |

It screams at 500kbps down. Only 128K up, but still better than landline or one way satellite(which still uses landline for uplink). No DSL available here. Only two small areas in modesto that have DSL available. I think it's because PacBell suxx. They screwed up their internet, and sold it to Prodigy. Earthlink lied about their satellite service, and decided to only offer two way at $69.95 a month, with a nearly $1,000.00 start up cost (gag....). Charter pipeline suddenly, with no fanfare, other than a minor thing in a flier they sent out, announced that they were offering it for $49.90 a month, with a free install till a certain date. I called and asked about it, the after discussing it with my dad, called back and scheduled it for install. the installers, one for the cable iteslf, and one for the computer part, were early. And did an excellent job. They provided a LAN card at no charge, mine to keep, and it was set up and running quite fast. I did have to call support to get email turned on... I called support to ask about running a server. I was told this is not, supposedly, allowed. I could contest this, though, as the agreement I have does not say a thing about that. I also found out that I can save $10.00 a month if I buy my own cable modem. only have to make sure it is DOCSIS, and has a MAC address. I have added a linksys Router, which is working well, and was fairly easy to set up, so far. Didn't have to modify any address to get it working. did have to do one little tweak, I forget what excactly. I already had a firewall, Zonealarm, set up and running. I found I get a lot more pings and scans... Don't run DSL or cable without a firewall, or, for that matter, a virus scanner. And don't believe everything that the sales people tell you, as they don't know, sometimes, as much as they should. I had been told it was 500K both ways, ha ha ha... It is 500K+ downlink, but is limited to about 128K uplink. this information from their support line, which does well when they're not busy... oh yes, I don't recommend D-Link for routers or cards. Linksys and Netgear I will... <|:^)>

| I have one of those business-type DSL setups (working for my ISP has it's benefits) 768k/768k SDSL service. I use a router with 14 "real" Internet IP's assigned to it, so I don't have any type of proxy/NAT stuff to deal with. The router is a Flowpoint 2200, which I think is from like 1992 because it only has 10Mbit ports on it. I uplink'd to a 10/100 switch and my workstations feed off of that. My DSL is decent. I originally had 1.1Mbit SDSL, but for some reason my loop length mysteriously "changed" one day and now I can only get 768k. Still, it's a solid 768k, and my latency is exceptional. My friend a few towns over has cable, and I get a lower ping time to HIS gateway than HE does. One of the beauties is the transparancy of it.. My DSL is always on, always there, and never needs to be initialized. I turn a workstation on, it's on the net, immediately. My town recently got cable modem access. I was thinking of checking it out, maybe doing some kinda multi-homed setup.. From my apartment! 8) See, that's why I'm Super. -SSZ |

| Go for the speed. You won't believe how fast ADSL is, especially after upgrading from that crappy-old 56 K dial-up analog transfer. It has less downtime in a year Don't forget to tweak your cable connection, find out on how to Optimizing your xDSL/Cable Modem Connection here: http://www.hardwareoc.com/optimize.php And fyi, the link to Intel Inf driver 2.90.007 is not working and is still there on the frontpage of this forum. The file located at ftp://ftp.asuscom.de/pub/ASUSCOM/TRE...ie_290_007.exe has been deleted by Asus Germany as soon as the newer driver comes out Last edited by Mushkin Rules : 05-26-2001 at 05:06 AM. |

| Here are the best Internet/Network and other cool Tweaks ever put together: This is the Internet/Network section where we hosts the best and some of the most complete Internet/Network tweaks ever written. Unlike many others one-fits-all Internet Tweaks which mostly dont work because every system, OS and connection is unique and different, ours are customised for your exact operating system and connection type. All of the Tweaks (except Dial-Ups) includes our Special Tweak that will boost your Network performance by assigning maximum memory possible to the Adapters together along with proven TCP/IP settings such as Rcwin, TTL and others. An uninstaller that safely returns all previous settings is included in all the Tweaks even though I have not yet heard anyone wanting to do so especially after enjoying good speeds. Scroll down to select your connection & operating system type and start maximising your connection. Important : It is highly recommended that you uninstall and remove all previous Tweaks (including our beta versions) before installing our new ones as to ensure maximum compatibility and for the new settings to effectively take place. Due to the amount of people downloading CyberTweaks all at once, you may experience some slow downloading speeds. You may choose however to get CyberTweaks from an alternate high capacity server like Tweakfiles.com Download here: http://liquid2k.com/cyberwizardpit/download.html |

| Thanks for all the input guys! Looks like I have to wait for a while. The speeds on the only ADSL line I can get are patetic (not only compared to what you guys told me). Cable Internet will be available this year (they say)... I'll do a comparison then. What ticks me off most is that even the guys working for the company that provides me with ADSL (should I go for it), think it suxx.. 1024 mbit/s is pretty sucky.... It will give an enormous speed advantage of dial-up but that doesn't justify paying more than $60 a month for that connection. They better come up with something faster soon! SSZ: funny story! hehe

| Using QWEST for my DSL (640K down/256K up). Been using them since December of '99. $29.95 a month for the DSL connection and $17.95 for ISP. What sucks though is when I signed up I got an internal PCI ADSL modem. It's a Cisco 605 and it works fine but they only have drivers for WIN95, 98 & NT 4.0. I will eventually get sick of Win98SE but I will have to find a new ADSL modem! Anybody know where to find a good external ADSL modem for a reasonable price. (QWEST will sell me one but they charge $295!)
