I managed to plow my way through the review at Tom's Networking before heading off for karate practice and they actually test the routing throughput to be 93 Mbit. Perhaps D-Links own performance figures are "worst case" measured under the worst possible circumstances (e.g. with the firewall applying the maximum number of rules and with GameFuel enabled (especially with GameFuel enabled, I would expect to see a big drop in routing throughput)) - or maybe Tom's Networking tests DMZ <=> WAN speeds rather than LAN <=> WAN.

Tommy44,
I will try to describe the setup and then you can perhaps put some of these speculations to the test.

If anyone spots errors or shortcomings in the procedure below, please do not hesitate to jump in with corrections or improvements.

Simple Test of Routing Throughput

Sanity Check
First off, a sanity check. We assume that there are two computers connected (not wireless) to the router in your standard configuration[1]. Copy a large file (500+ MB) between the computers and time the time to check that both computers are capable of sending and receiving at 100 Mbit. At 100 Mbit you should be able to send 100 MB in about 8-12 seconds.

[1] It does not really matter if your computers are configured with Gbit network interface cards. We just want to make sure that the computers are capable of transfers of at least 100 Mbit.

The Setup
Disable traffic shaping in the router (e.g. GameFuel for the DGL-4300). Most likely, the traffic shaping engine is not designed/dimensioned to handle traffic in the 80-100 Mbit range.

Now, you move one of the computers to the WAN side. Simply unplug router from the cable/DSL modem and plug it into the computer which will act as WAN computer. You must then assign a fixed IP to the WAN computer for the experiment to work, 10.0.0.2 using subnet mask 255.255.255.0 will work. Next, assign 10.0.0.3 as a fixed IP for the router with the same subnet mask as the WAN computer, 255.255.255.0.

Finally, you must configure a Virtual Server (port forwarding) to enable windows shares on the LAN computer. The port to forward to your LAN computer should be port 139.

Testing Connectivity
You should now be able to ping the WAN computer from the LAN computer (from a command prompt: ping 10.0.0.2).

If the router is configured for unlimited Internet access then you should also be able to see Windows shares just like before using \\10.0.0.2\[SHARE] where [SHARE] is the name of the share.

Likewise, you should be able to see the windows shares on the LAN computer by opening \\10.0.0.3\[SHARE] from the WAN computer.

Testing Routing Throughput
Copy a large file (again 500+ MB is preferable) and time the transfer.

Just for kicks, you can enable traffic shaping (e.g. GameFuel) and rerun the transfer to see the impact of the traffic shaping on throughput. Disable traffic shaping again before the next test.

Now, configure the router to place the LAN computer in the DMZ and disable the Virtual Server rule for port 139. Repeat the file copy and time the transfer.

Ubicom has made a new processor 5000 class. I have not seen any products with this processor as of yet, and I am actually awaiting the time. However, I would not feel that you would lose support due to the latter architecture being considered old. It is true that this is happening all too often now, but support is based more on Ubicom rather than D-Link. Which can be an advantage. I think it can be safe to purchase this router and be happy with it for around 3 years, or maybe longer.
I would value your response at a bit more than 2 cents.

And I was hoping to uncover something like the last part. With the DLG-4300 having more than a year on its back, I was pondering about when an upgraded version would be released. Since Ubicom has released a new processor perhaps D-Link will soon follow suit with an upgraded version of the DGL-4300 featuring WPA2 and MIMO. In that case I shall definitely be among the first to buy, hehe.

I agree, BTW, about the potential uses of the DGL-4300. It has some very interesting features that can be used for much more than upping your frag count while pounding the connection with P2P downloads/uploads. The traffic shaping part combined with the Gbit switch really caught my interest when I came across this unit.

My email to D-Link's official presales email address also bounced. Apparently, there must be something about my emails that D-Link does not like...

I shall have to try from a different email account.

just so you know, the current DGL-4300 does have WPA2 included. I am using it right now in conjunction with AES.

I'll try to run your test when I get a chance. Probably over this weekend. I have 4 PCs and a laptop connected to it without any problems or slow downs.

Awesome. On both counts!

I was hoping that a firmware upgrade would have included WPA2, but I have not been able to find documentation on it. The DGL-4300 is looking more and more like my next router...

FYI, I am going to make small edit in the above test description. In order to test speeds to and from the DMZ, you probably have to disable the Virtual Server for port 139. I searched google for the port number to use for Windows shares and port 139 was the best bet. I hope someone chimes in if it is incorrect.

No problem at all. I'm in no rush. My only priority is making the right choice.

Hey StarTraveller,

I just tried you test and it was a disaster. I did mention to get through step 1. PC#1 has Gigabit LAN and PC#2 has 100Mbit LAN. I transferred a 280MB file between the two computers:
PC#1 to PC#1 took 32 seconds
PC#2 to PC#1 took 35 seconds

Then I started having trouble moving to the next step. I got the GameFuel turned off. I plugged PC#2 into the WAN port of the router and left PC#1 in the LAN port that it was in. I changed PC#2 to IP 10.0.0.3 with subnet 255.255.255.0. Am I suppoesed to leave PC#1 at its 192.168 IP address? You said something about changing the IP address of the actual router...am i really supposed to do this? I saw a spot where I could change it so I tried to change it to 10.0.0.3 with subnet 255.255.255.0. I'm on DSL so do i have to turn off the PPPoE and replace it with a static address? I tried doing that, but it kept asking me for a DNS. I also setup a Virtual Server for TCP port 139 and pointed it to my PC#1's (LAN side) IP address. So at this point I tried to do the ping from the PC#1 (LAN side) toPC#2 and to the router (on 10.0.0.3) and both were unreachable. So I thought I could troubleshoot it within the router again, but since I changed the router IP address I couldn't get back into it. Even when I typed in the 10.0.0.3 into the address bar. So I did a factory reset, loaded in my old settings and I'm calling it a night. What did I do wrong? I'm not a networking expert by any stretch of the imagination so you might have to elaborate some of these steps a little more for me to pull this off without pulling my hair out. Sorry.

I'm sorry the test went South for you and that you had to go through all those hoops.

At first when I read your description, I thought it sounded like you did everything right, but obviously something must have gone wrong. Could it be that you changed both the LAN and WAN IP of the router to 10.0.0.3?

That's the best explanation I could think of for the scenario to play out like you describe. Your LAN computer (PC#1) is using a 192.168.0.x IP with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and therefore it would have been unable to reach the router if it used the IP 10.0.0.3 on the LAN side (10.0.0.3 is outside PC#1's subnet so it looks for a gateway on 192.168.0.1, but finds none and thus reports that the destination host is unreachable when you tried to ping the gateway on 10.0.0.3). And since PC#1 can't even reach the router then it's of course impossible to see PC#2 on the WAN side also.

I've made the illustration below to aid in the setup if you're willing to give it another try.

Hopefully, it illustrates how the different boxes should be configured with regards to IP addresses.

To eliminate potential issues all IP addresses could be assigned statically (and you're correct in assuming that PPPoE should be disabled for the router's WAN IP). Subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0 for all configurations. PC1's gateway should be 192.168.0.1 (the router's LAN IP). On PC2 the gateway can either be left blank or assigned to be 10.0.0.1 (it makes no difference for the purpose of the test).

If you have any questions about any of this I'll be more than happy to answer to the best of my abilities. It can be very useful to know something about networking and particularly network troubleshooting.

Oh no, don't worry about it. It's not your fault that it went south. If I had any clue as to what I was doing I'd be a little more helpful. I am going to try this again. The diagram you made is going to make it much easier. I don't know all the network jargon so I'm going to take a few screen shots of the router configuration and ask you to help me figure out what to put in a few fields that I don't know what to do with.
Let me start out with your diagram. Why are their two IP address for each end of the "wire?" For PC#1 I would go into the Network TCP/IP settings from control panel and set the static IP to be 192.168.0.2. I would do the same with PC#2 except set IP to be 10.0.0.3 and set both of their subnets to 255.255.255.0. Correct? This is all I have to do on teh computer end. Everything else is done in the router, correct? On the router I see you have labeled 192.168.0.1 AND 10.0.0.2. Why two? I must be missing something. Where do I type in these numbers? Any idea as to what the router calls them?
I'm going to throw up some screen shots to help clarify as soon as I can grab them.
I'm learning a lot already and I'd like to thank you for bearing with me on this, unless you want to give up.

Step 1
PC#1 TCP/IP Settings. Nothing has been touchin in the advanced tab.
IP = 192.168.0.2
Subnet = 255.255.255.0
PC#1 TCPIP Settings.jpg

Step 2
PC#2 TCP/IP Settings. Nothing has been touchin in the advanced tab.
IP = 10.0.0.3
Subnet = 255.255.255.0
PC#2 TCPIP Settings.jpg

Step 3
Login to router. I go into the WAN settings and this is what I see...
WAN.jpg
What do I enter in these boxes?

Step 4
Configure LAN
LAN.jpg
This is the router's IP address correct? I shouldn't have to change this I think.
I also need to go into the DHCP settings for the router and turn it off since I'm setting static addresses, right?

Step 5
Virtual Server
Is this setup correctly?
Virutal Server.jpg

Did I get everything? I still don't see where I am putting 10.0.0.2.
