| Other than the maximum cable length of 10 meters and the limitation of eight computers with a USB to USB peer to peer direct cable connection, what other considerations are there? Some of the other factors I'm thinking of are cost of cards, cost of cables, ease of installation and maintenance, speed of data, IRQ's, com ports, etc. Thanks for yor comments.

| Well I went and got some 10/100 ethernet cards and a hub. So be it. DCC will be another project some day. Is there a network forum here somewhere? Where is the NetBEUI, IPX/SPX, and TCP/IP talk happening?

| hi traveler.. i think you made the right right choice..maximum throughput of USB is 12MB...a 100MB hub/nic setup, is obviously much better. i know here i cna get 100MB NICS for like 15bux..a hub is a little more, but i want a switch good question bout the networking...hafta check with some mods about that... what do you need to know? i have a 4 computer network here at my house..i only use TCP-IP, as that is the easiest to set up and the most universal...i could add another 3-4 puters to the network in a jiffy..insanely easy to set up too netbeui and ipx are dying protocols imho...netbeui being propritary(M$) and unnecessary, ipx only used on 1 kind of network, and not used for much alse that i am aware of..... both have higher overheads as well, if i can remember my lectures form a year ago, LOL hth cryogen

| I did go with a Linksys EtherFast 10/100 Switch and at Full Duplex it is doing 200 Mbps. At least that's what the colored lights say on the front of the blue case. The switch looks good with all those LED's. I do have a protocol problem happening. My Celeron 500 Intel LX win98se machine had only one slot left, an ISA slot. So I bought a Linksys Ether16 card for it. I can only get it to do NetBEUI. And the only drivers the machine will accept are the NE2000 drivers from win98se. It's only "short term" though. This card will eventually go to my 486 machine when I can free up a PCI slot for a Etherfast card. At that time the other protocals better work (for gaming)! But I am getting ahead of myself here. I still have work to do on the Asus. So, do you think we need a "Computer Networks" Forum here?

| Quite possible that someone posted to the thread and then decided to delete their post. If traveler received an email message telling him that someone had posted to this thread then he could tell who it is. Otherwise CJ could dig through the logs. All in all, I wouldn't worry about it too much. I would think that traveler has it all sorted out since he has been playing with print servers and the like.
