Quick question about direct connection to Modem after Router failure

I am helping a co-worker. HIs router is completley dead. BFSX-41 Linksys. Nothing special done to it, just going thru the default setup to get his two PC connected to the 'net. Anyway with it being dead he wanted to connect back to his modem directly to surf temporarily. He says that Now he cant get a connection. I asked him to reboot both modem and PC and try again. No luck. I've personally noticed this on one occassion where switching from a router to the modem, its not a simple connection. What am I missing ?

I think your friend has to call their ISP to make the change.
I sorta remember that when I added a router years ago, I had to register the mac address of the router with my ISP before it worked properly.
Hope it helps

You should be able to make the setting changes yourself.

Try pushing the reset button on the modem for six seconds to reset the modem back to factory defaults. Then access the modem using its IP address. After accessing the modem's settings, set them to what's needed for his ISP.

At the moment, the router is doing all the housekeeping. Without the router, the modem now has to do it. Factory defaults has this enabled for the initial setup of the modem.

Don't forget without the router there will be no hardware firewall.

I've had to do this a few times myself to avoid the extra charges from my ISP for networked extra computers. They charge me for one modem and one computer directly connected to it. I put in the router and switches and did the setting changes in the modem and router.

umm..I think there is a misunderstanding. It was hooked up to the modem directly before. Comcast. It was as simple as just hooking up and surfing . Then he bought a router and went thru it instead. And that was working fine. Since that fried he wants to GO BACK to hooking directly to modem. Thats not giving him a connection now. What could have changed ??

EDIT : not toyou Traveller. I posted this late...after you posted

No problem.

Push and hold the modem reset button for six seconds. See if that helps. Pushing the modem reset button for 1 or 2 seconds reboots the modem. Pushing the the reset button for 4 or 6 seconds resets the modem.

AR-

What I meant was I had to register my router with Comcast for it to work.
It makes sense to me that if the registered device is removed, that the connection will no longer work. Of course if simply resetting the modem fixes the problem, then it would be way easier to do that
Good luck!
