Exclamation remote desktop

ok I just got a new laptop and I'm trying to get remote desktop working on it so I can view my main pc files and what not while i'm in the other room or at work either way, but i can't seem to get my network to work.... here's the first problem i run into

My network is the defaut mshome network but it's saying it doesn't contain any terminal services, not sure what that means but is there anything i need to enable for this to work??

Any help will be great, thanks!

What are you connecting to and with? Windows XP?

It almost sounds like you need this except if you're using XP on both you shouldn't need it.

Try this. I use it all the time to update, maintain, etc. four networked computers on a home LAN. Great piece of free software.

VNC is great but RDP is much more straightforward and easy to get running so I would advice him to stick with RD.

We need more data... What OS are we talking about... At least make sure you have the "allow users to remotely connect..." checked under, system, remote and that you select the users that are allowed to logon.

You have to enable the ability first in system properties. After you have done such, you will need to create an account with a password for the remote user to log-on. If one exists, then this will not be necessary.

Right click my computer
Select remote tab
Second field toggle "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer"

Like I said but he will have to add that user to the RD group otherwise the user will still not be able to connect.

So checking that checkbox is not sufficient!

Remote desktop is a very handy feature....
You have to install it on the computer your are going to access in add/remove programs Windows components
Then, in SYSTEM/REMOTE check allow remote users box.
If you have a network, enable port forwarding of 3389 to the machine you will remotely access. Also enable remote access through firewall.
From the client machine you use to access, Programs/accessories/communications/remote desktop, choose options, set IP address of your MODEM, enter USER and pw you would normally use on the host machine, connect. You will then connect and be on the desktop of the host machine as if you were sitting in front of it. You have all the permissions and access of that user as if you were actually using that machine. Note: if you are going to move files between the two machines, also go through LOCAL RESOURCES and check DISK DRIVES to enable drag and drop file movement. Go through the other tabs and adjust those settings appropriately as well.

Further instructions: search MSKB for Remote Desktop

Why use a third party app, like Ultra VNC, for something already built into Windows? Remote desktop works as advertised. You just have to set it up

The account is most likely an administration account, note "his laptop" "my main pc," which has remote desktop privileges. Some do not use passwords, such as myself, but have to use one if I prefer to use remote desktop. The account does not need to be added if it is an admin account. I was very ambiguous in that description.

According to his tag, he is using Media Center on one computer.

to clear up a few things....

ok here's my setup, sorry i didn't specify it before:
Laptop - Windows XP Professional SP2
Desktop - Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005

I do have a password on both computers because of other people as well as my attempt to use remote desktop, otherwise I normally don't have one.

I only have one account on each computer, the administrator, different names and passwords though.

Both computers have Remote Desktop enabled in the system properties.

When I try to use the remote desktop connection feature, from the start menu>assesories>communications, I go to browse for computers and i see mshome i try to click it to see what computers are there and it says "The MSHOME domain/workgroop does not contain any Terminal servers."

That's what problem I need to get around, unless there's a specific address that'll get me there so i don't have to browse but I don't think that'll work either but it's worth a shot I guess. Thanks again for the help, I'll try it with what's been said and leave another post when I can.

Is there a way to prevent your username from being displayed to the world when you open an RDP request to your computer? I mean, it's a lot harder to break into a computer if you have to figure out a username and a password, I would think...

I tried the registry edit "donotdisplaylastusername" and rebooted but that doesn't seem to fix it.

Anybody know?
