| I am considering a Router for my home network, 2 desktops and a laptop, and would like the opinions of this august group as to 1) Brand 2) W/ or W/O Firewall. The ISP I'm using is ATT @Home with a RCA modem I currently have Norton Internet Security 2001. The two that have attracted my interest are the Linksys BEFSR41 and the Netgear RT314. Any and all opinions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike

| mcdonald43, have a look at the ZyWALL 10 (www.zyxel.com). features: Denial of Service Stateful inspection Java, ActiveX, Cookie blocking Content Filtering Multi-to-Multi NAT Logs and alert Price unbeatable. One RJ34 port though, so HUB or Switch required if you want to have more than >1 PC in Home Network. I have it working now for more than 6 months. VPN capability available in June 2001! Good luck. |

| I am using the BEFSR41 on a home LAN with 3 desktops and I really like it a lot, very easy to setup and all the network benchmarks I've run show around 98mbs....

| I use (And have for the past 16 months) a UMAX UGATE 3000 with AT&T Cable. Took all of less than one minute to set up. Running 3 PC's with no problems at ALL the whole time. Not even a router restart! Has NAT technology built in for security and is capable of PPP for DSL if ever needed.

| Try the Xrouter Pro also known as the mih-130a. Features:  sharing internet access: for at least 4 users/comps, even more when used in combination with 1 or more hubs (up to 255 users) Supports cable/dsl modems Built in DHCP-server 4-port switched ethernet hub 10/100mbps Virtual server Security through NAT Easy configuration through a Web browser (web-based management) I've been using it for 2 months now and i am very pleased with it. No need for a firewall anymore. |

| I second tomp's post about the smc7004br router. the print server function was the deciding factor for me.I 've had mine for 4 months and no complaints with 4 computers networked for 5 family members. setup was very easy and netIQ shows over 98 mbs but not having to check if a dedicated machine is on to print from is really nice. hardware NAT firewall protection is the only way to go but have heard of people using both zonealarm and a hardware router solution.can you say paranoid? afterhours Last edited by afterhours : 06-11-2001 at 02:39 PM. |

| I like my Linksys 10/100 switch. I have no bench marks but the LED's say 200 Mbps.

| To All, Thanks for the input! I ordered a SMC Barricade today for two reasons; 1) It showed up frequently recommended and 2) The print server closed the deal. Thanks to all who took the time to reply
