Security problem on this site????

Over in the Nvidia Chipsets forum there is a thread titled "nForce Screenies" Everytime I click on it to read the thread my Firewall, (Norton Personal Firewall) pops up a HIGH RISK alert that says..."An Attempt to send Credit Card Info has been made to the website asusboards.com. You must permit or block this information in order to fully load the page."

Of course I blocked this request and am unable to read the thread. As long as I have been on the boards I have NEVER had this happen before.

Do we have a Hacker trying to steal CC info on the boards or is there something else going on here.

This thread was started by "Jomiwic" Not making any accusations here but this really concerns me because it has never happened before & I do store my CC info on the PC since I buy online alot.

Any ideas Moderators??

hmm thats weird Krei.
i just checked the thread. i dont use norton fw, but there doesn't seem to be any links there that go anywhere secure?..
hopefully one of the mods will check it out soon.
i have a feeling it *might* just be the SW, some of them get quite picky about here they go sometimes .....

Not saying that I trust *ANY* Software 100% but it seems odd that I have never had that warning before from ANY site. Makes me glad that I have it.

Keri,

It is our common conern, I think.
(Thank you Keri for your information)

I use Sophos Anti-Virus in my Server(Win2K Server) and Workstations(Win2K Pro). From both systems, I connected/clicked the thread, left it open about 10 minutes.

Then, I clicked 3 links in Jomiwic's post(s). No Problem at all.

It is 9:45pm 24th June, Bangkok, SouthEast Asia Time (= 23rd June in USA).

Anti-Virus software would not detect this if it is trying to obtain CC info. Only a good firewall catches things like that. If you are not running a firewall I would refrain from visiting any links untill we know what is causing this in that thread.

Norton Personal Firewall
I'd say dump the Norton and go for ZoneAlarm...

check Gibson Research company
And find out... Zonealarm (PRO) rocks!

Norton (and blackICE!) has virtually no protection to Trojan-Horses like Sub7..... think about that!

While you are @GRC be sure to check out the report of the DDOS attack on grc.com VERY interesting...

ZoneAlarm does not report any problems with the nVidia thread... Strange that Norton did.

Sorry, Had enough problems out of Zone Alarm in the field. I will never put it on my PC. And Norton Personal Firewall 2001 DOES have the same protection.

I agree with you that BlackIce SUX!!

As for Steve's site, I have been there and seen it all. Love the site. Shields up says ALL stealh with what I am using.

Norton seems like a fine firewall, but did you also know that programs on your pc will communicate on the internet without you knowing it? Does Norton Firewall prevent outgoing info as well?

I've had a couple of friends who have tried Zone Alarm and they swore they would never use it again just to find out that they had a setting wrong or didn't program zonealarm the proper way. Don't worry, we're not trying to convince you to use zonealarm but when a program or software as important as firewalls start to tell me something is happening when something isn't, i'd question it. Have you ever tried Zone Analyzer? It analyzes all incoming and outgoing packets. Just like adware, some programs will contact the internet without you knowing it. Sierra (maker of games) will sometimes attempt to connect to their website. Others are Real Player, Windows media player etc.

I'd rather know who's hitting me and who is trying to use my pc to send info.

My 2 bits

Well, Let's see.....If Norton told me that that thread was trying to get my CC info then I would say that it detects outgoing since the warning asked me if I wanted to let it go out. And yes it does also ask when anything wants to send info out and asks if I should always allow, Never allow or allow once. Seems the answer is that without any knowledge of this program a lot of people sure want to bash it because of it's name. It didn't tell me something was happening when it wasn't, It gave me a valid warning that my CC info was about to be sent if I allowed it. That to me is the reason we use firewalls!

Bashing?

keri,

I'm not bashing Norton. All I'm suggesting is that Norton might be telling you wrong info. Look at the settings, make sure it's configured properly. That's all. Programs can be a pain, even the best ones if they are not set right. I'm not trying to sell you on ZoneAlarm...it works for me and others, same goes for Norton. We all have our preferences.

I'm sorry if my reply sounded contrary.

I can accept that. I know you don't know this so I don't mean to sound arrogant but I am an Certified Computer Technician and I do know how to configure these things. There is SOMETHING in that thread either malicious or bad code that is trying to obtain personal data from my system. Norton Personal Firewall just paid for itself with this one incident. Who knows what might have happened had my CC number gotton out.

The Newest Ad-aware 5.5

You can download the Free-ware version of Ad-Aware 5.5.
It worked flawlessly in my Win2K Pro and Win98SE systems.

Not sure why you're getting that warning. I can assure you there are no CC numbers or anything like that on this site. We're not selling anything...
