With the system that is Vista, enable flow control if present in the driver options. Layer 2 flow control is disabled by default and should not be unless you have an expensive switch that can handle the packets per second. This could resolve the issue due to packet retransmits. If there is an option for TX and RX enable this one. Layer 2 flow control should be enabled even if the problem is persistent. Leave all TCP and networking settings at default. Do not change them.

So XP-to-Vista is dog slow, huh?

That's weird. Did you try setting up a web server on the server and yanking files over HTTP instead of over SMB/CIFS (file sharing)? A bit cumbersome, but if it's a protocol issue, then bypassing the protocol may yield satisfactory results.

Coping files from vista to server 2003 and xp works, coping files from server 2003 and xp to vista is slow. I run a ftp site but its a pain to put ther user and password in, i mite end up just going back to xp all together.
