Slow network performance: cpu or hard drives?

Sending files from computers to my server is very fast highing 72mb/sec. But when coping files off my server to other computer im getting about 9mb/sec or less. It seems either the cpu or hard drives could have something to do with it. Not sure on this?

Server
Celeron D 3.2 @ 3.6ghz
2GB DDR3200
ECS 915L motherboard
WD 80gb hdd server 2003
3x 320 seagate 16mb 7200rpm sata2
1x 300 maxtor 16mb 7200rpm ide/100

The sata ports on my motherboard are only sata1. My system is in my profile and it flys sending files between server and other machines.

Have you updated the server's drivers? Also what is the load on the cpu when sending and receiving? I doubt that the hard drive would be to blame as writes take more time than reads.

Copying the file from my server to my pc is only between 5-10% cpu usage.

What happens when you run HD Tach on the drive? Very odd that you have 64 up and 8 down

Wonder if it could be that i have the jumper on sata2 on the hard drive and the ports are only sata1 could be causing the problem.

But if you have 62MB read but only 6MB read over the network I doubt the jumper would be the cause.

I just got a all new server and put xp pro just to see if it works better then 2k3 for file sharing. I copied the same file as before and the speed hasnt changed at all. All new hardware and a different os and no changes so it has to be a problem in Vista.

I didn't realize Vista was in the mix, I've had a hell of a time with it for large files or directories with a lot of files..If I have to copy anything big like an iso across my network I just boot into XP..
Try disabling the firewall in Vista, You can also try unchecking "Remote Differential Compression" in Start\Control Panel\Programs and Features, Click on ‘Turn windows features on or off’ .... I've read varying degrees of success with this though..
