virus

I'm working on this virus, spyware infested laptop of a friend of mine. It would be a lot easier if I could connect it to the internet. However, I do not want to do this on my home connection for fear that my computers will also be at risk.

I have the standard home internet network, cable modem hooked to router,3 computers lan and 3 wireless. Can my stuff be at risk? Probably depends on what the virus' are correct? TIA

No unless A. it is infected with a worm B. none of your machines have been updated against OS exploits that these worm like.

Re: virus

OK thanks . The main prob is Smitfraud and Virtumonde , either one is being cleaned by spybot .It finds it and I hit the fix button but they come right back. Thats why I asked about other pay programs. They are finding them also but wont clean unless you buy.

Re: virus

You need to either do it in safemode or shutoff auto restore.

These seem to be in the registry and the registry gets restored at boot time.

Re: virus

Thanks for your reply, I actually did that right before I came back here to read replies. Any chance there is an easy way to update AVG free without being online? TIA

Re: virus

Yes go to MajorGeeks.com - Download Freeware and Shareware Computer Utilities.

go to the antivirus and download the avg updates on one of your networked system. Then either burn to a cd or put it on a diskette or a thumb drive
and load it to your infected system.

The other thing that you could do is uncable you networked system and only attach the system you are working on. The router should have a hardware firewall.

This should make your other systems safe but allow you to work on the infected system and have online access.
