Re: Wireless N standard ?

I believe DLink has products that carry a guarantee that they'll support the ratified .11n standard when it's put in place (that is, they vow to upgrade the product when the standard is ratified, most likely through a new firmware). I'd check that out if I was looking to buy pre-.11n hardware.

Re: Wireless N standard ?

IIRC, basically what is being worked on is a '2.0' version of the .11n standard since initial results from draft-n wireless devices where only marginally better than the wireless G standard.

And if I understand it correctly we only get the benefit of greater range and speed if both sides of the connection are 802.11n. So those laptops we have with existing wireless will not be able to wander farther from the n-rated WAP than they do now.

Precisely.

Re: Wireless N standard ?

Well I've jumped on the Draft N bandwagon... I haven't had a chance to test it out seeing that it arrived today... I purchased a Linksys WRT150N router & a WPC300n notebook adapter combo for a customer, delivered @ $109...

All I've accomplished at this point is configuration. Installation and testing is set for tomorrow.

I do have a question for anyone or everyone that's into the wireless evolution.

Why haven't these companies been developing the 802.11a?

From my time researching WISP radios and solutions, 802.11a outperforms 802.11n. I haven't read much on this since early 2007, but I figured manufacturers would be all over the (a) standard by now.
