If a shop runs XP there's no need to upgrade to Vista. I agree completely with that. But saying "we'll never use Vista" and then running an unsupported OS on thousands of machines is, well, unintelligent.
I am really surprised. Has your company done a payback analysis to determine how much money they will lose on a Vista changeover with an end of life of one year?

Re: Companies Adopt "Just Say No" Policy On Vista, Wait For Windows 7

Maraud----let's make a bet....

Drinks on me----or you---at the Viginia Beach Ocean Front Hilton...

I say you won't see Windows 7 for at least......

Well---you aint gonna see it this Xmas----7 months away

And you ain't gonna see it next Xmas----19 months away

Maybe-----Maybe----just maybe by the following Xmas-----31 months from now

That's a LONG time----and they are gonna sell a TON of Vista by then----and get an SP2----and everyone will just........adjust.......

I like Vista----it took newer hardware---some adjusting-----some tweaks.....

But I like it......

You on for the bet???

Guess I could ship you the drinks If I lose....

John

PS----I still believe that your "repackage Vista" theory has merit...

I just don't think they are gonna do it.....for a long while.....

kONGO makes a good point. For companies who are running Windows 2000 Pro and facing EOL issues, Vista is not a bad choice. "Upgrading" to Windows XP Pro will leave them close to EOL and they will have to make other financial decisions sooner than if they upgrade to Vista.

That statement makes no factual sense.

Windows Vista lifecycle

Vista product support ends in 2014 with extended support ending in 2017. Xp product support ends next year.

Thinking that Microsoft would somehow stop supporting Vista just because Ballmer appears confused or admits that it wasn't their best release yet is assuming too much.

Re: Companies Adopt "Just Say No" Policy On Vista, Wait For Windows 7

Another fun thing about the Win7 rumors is that suddenly everyone thinks it will be delivered on time and that it will beat Vista in every way. The Microsoft track record says otherwise. Even those who hate Vista religiously are saying "I'll wait for Win7 because it won't suck as much" even though there's nothing factual suggesting that will be the case.

It's borderline delusional.

Well, that is the way geeks think. We are sooooo much better now that history will not repeat itself. I hear that weekly, if not daily, at work.

I agree with what you are saying but when a company pre anounces a new operating system, order flow for the current system will slow or even disappear. That is marketing 101. Most companies will and should hold out for the latest OS since they buy many and always look for the most bang for the buck. How do you know that MS will keep their word on support for 2014/2017. They may decide that it is too costly and terminate it sooner. I would not take the risk but then again I do not work for your company.

Again you may be right but you may be wrong, I hope you are not the one that made that decision, it could cost you your job.

Heh, the decision is bound to have been months and months in the making. I started a week ago.

I have about as much clout as the grime in the keyboards.

Win2k just blows. And there's no support for it. And people have to use IE6. Etc.

Actually, remember XP came out right after ME. So sometimes they do it right.

Why can't I post a photo attachment in this thread? Is it my morning breath?

True enough. But XP was a completely different beast, they shared almost nothing (Me was 98SE with more suck; XP was NT with more awesome, it shared more with Win2k). And since the launch of XP, what have Microsoft done right? Or on time? Office and the Visual Studio products usually are pretty nifty, but other than that they've done nothing to impress me.

There has been talk of the new "small" kernel in Win7, but a lot has been hyperbole since the kernel in XP or Vista is quite tiny as well.

I just find it funny that there's a lot of people lambaste Microsoft for the Vista failure (3½ years late and a dollar short) yet expect them to correct every single problem, make Win7 smaller, faster and significantly better and then deliver that on time. All of that goes against what MS has done so far, which is to say add more stuff, slow it down, make it less good and deliver it late.

Instead of organizational changes on all levels (including top brass) they try to buy Yahoo! since they're convinced they need to be Google. Ballmer appears more incoherent than ever. BillG is stepping down. Nothing suggests they've wised up is what I'm saying.

Good luck in the new job. I am glad that you did not make the decision.

Seems to me that your company tried to save money by skipping XP and now they are between a rock and a hard place. Using too old of an OS, too late for XP, and can't wait for Windows 7. Its the old Fram filter story, " pay me now or pay me later".
