Dell to Dump Its XPS Gaming Line in Favor of Alienware

I have to admit, when Dell bought Alienware in 2006, bringing a premier line of gaming PCs into the fold, the move didn't seem to make all that much sense, as Dell already had its XPS gaming PC line. Now it seems that Dell agrees that it doesn't need both lines.

Next month, according to the Wall Street Journal, Dell will begin phasing out four gaming systems in its XPS line of PCs. This will leave the Alienware line as its sole "true" gaming systems...

they're diminishing the Alienware 'name' by keeping their XPS line...why did they even bother buying them out for then?...same thing with HP & VoodooPC...good thing there's still Falcon Northwest out there

Re: Dell to Dump Its XPS Gaming Line in Favor of Alienware

I don't agree with your assessment. The XPS line has evolved into something to me which is more about quality than gaming. Alienware to me has always been about gaming first and foremost.

I know in the laptop world, most people IMO don't buy XPS for their gaming capabilities, they buy them for their looks/aesthetics/form.

Re: Dell to Dump Its XPS Gaming Line in Favor of Alienware

And they just laid off over 1300 people at the call centre I worked at (that includes me), closed the place down, paid out the penalties to the city, shut down manufacturing in the US. You think 2 XPS models would stop them from making a change? I hate to disappoint you, but if the needs of the business say it should be done, I guarantee it will be done, and promptly. After 3.5 years of working at Dell, I know one thing for certain, if they are going to change direction, they will do so, and it will happen very fast. They announced lay offs for my call centre in October of 2007, then the closure of our site at the end of January 2008 and had everyone out by the last week in April. The Ottawa closure will be even faster. So don't let the fact that two recent releases of XPS systems occured fool you.

One thing is for sure. Dell won't hesitate to change directions.

Sorry to hear that, Gorgo. Hope it works out for the best for you in the long run.

Re: Dell to Dump Its XPS Gaming Line in Favor of Alienware

I don't agree with this statement at all. What Dell is doing is strictly a business decision to stay alive in the world market. Not everything is going to be a popular move. I don't take it personally, nor do I denounce Dell in any way, shape or form. It sucks to be out of a job, but I've gotten a lot in return.

I would still recommend a Dell system to anyone who needed a computer and a company to call on for support.

Re: Dell to Dump Its XPS Gaming Line in Favor of Alienware

I'm young enough that I can carry on and find another job. Finding a good job when you near retirement is a lot harder unfortunately. I hope things otherwise turned out good for him.

Thanks bud, me too. Right now I'm enjoying some time off. I got to go golfing during the week when the green fees were cheaper, lol.
