Intel can drop Quad cores to $100

We’ve learned that Intel can afford to drop the price of cheapest quad core all the way to $100 but it doesn’t want to do it simply because it doesn’t have to.

Quad core is sexy and theoretically faster than many dual cores and Intel has created quite a nice marketing scam around them.

Most of the time Quad doesn’t mean much faster than dual but people still want to have four cores rather than two, even when it means a lower clock speed.

Fudzilla - Intel can drop Quad cores to $100

I would hardly call it a scam. Intel are charging ridiculoulsy low prices for hardware that blows away anything that came before.

Which leads me to think I am needing a new motherboard... hehe

I agree, Tam, and I'd add that I doubt the veracity of the FUDZilla article. For one thing, it doesn't say that they can sell it for $100 and make a profit. I can envision that the basis of the article could very conceivably have been some off-the-cuff remark by an Intel executive, taken out of context, who might have said something like "we're not worried about AMD; if they improve their product we could even sell our cheapest quad core for $100 if necessary to be competitive."

And I believe their current cheapest quad core is the Q6600, which makes the article's references to 45nm Yorkfield's seem confused.

Best,
-- Al

I can hardly blame them for not dropping their prices on the quads too low, at least not before their upcoming release. besides they have already dropped prices, or if not they are set to soon.

They've got a sweet little thing goin on right now: No competition.
AMD not providing much competition right now,...at least not yet.
