LCD TVs Outship CRT TVs For The First Time

Austin (TX) - LCD has become the most popular TV screen technology in the fourth quarter of 2007. For the first time, LCD TVs outshipped cathode ray tube (CRT) TVs, according to Displaysearch.
The market research firm estimates that LCD TVs captured a 47% share of the global TV market, which reached 60.8 million units in the fourth quarter of the year. CRT TVs held a 46% share while RPTVs and plasma display panel (PDP) TVs are estimated at 7%.
LCD TVs continued their strong growth, gaining 56% to a record of 28.5 million units during the quarter. For the entire year, Displaysearch estimated that about 79.3 million LCD TVs were shipped, translating into a 40% of the total market of 200 million TVs. On a revenue basis, LCD TVs are dominating the $100 billion market with more than $68 billion in sales during 2007.

I have heard that a lot of the big players are getting out of producing CRT's

Re: LCD TVs Outship CRT TVs For The First Time

I kinda like the idea of crt's (tv's) being phased out. I would think that woud put some more pressure on the cable companies to put out more HD channels. What I have here (IO cable) is fairly limited and LOTS of repeats. I guess I want a blu-ray player now. I'm glad I didn't jump on the HD-DVD train like I almost did. I would have lost that bet. My next major purchase is going to be a Beretta 90TWO anyway. More bang for the buck!

One thing my wife seen on the evening news was LCD and especially plasma TV use more electricity than CRT, I always thought it was the other way around?

I thought they burned less too until I got one. My 50" plasma has a max power comsuption of 695W plus the screen puts off so much heat I knew it had to be using quite a bit of juice. The 3 cooling fans in the back were another indication.

Re: LCD TVs Outship CRT TVs For The First Time

LCDs do use less power than CRTs if you compare the same screen size, a 32" widescreen CRT would use more power than a 32" widescreen LCD, but if you are comparing your 40" LCD to a 25" CRT then the LCD will probably use more. Plasmas use more than LCDs also.

I have a 42in plasma in my bed room and after about a hour or so it really starts to get hot.

Re: LCD TVs Outship CRT TVs For The First Time

I must be crazy, but I still dislike LCD TV's. I went into Bestbuy, Circuit City, Costco and PC Richards looking for a new tv (I was also getting a new microwave). Bestbuy and Costco did not have any CRT's.

I watched the "best" LCD's and all of them had motion artifacts that just are not there on a CRT. People tell me that I am crazy, but I think I'm not? One plasma was running blue-ray and I did not see any artifacts (but it was the most expensive one I saw).

I agree with you. LCD's still have a "jagged" look to me. Definitely not the same color depth, either.
