Nvidia to drop 280 / 260 prices

As of tomorrow, Nvidia plans drop the prices of Geforce GTX 280 and 260. The reason for this sudden price cut is that the cards are not selling as well as Nvidia expected. The second part of the story is that Radeon HD 4870 ended up better than Nvidia had hoped.

Nvidia will cut $90 of the Geforce GTX 280 price-tag, but this is Nvidia's price to partners and we are not sure just how much will this affect the suggested etail price. We are sure that end user prices will also drop but probably a bit less than $90.

The Geforce GTX 260 will be $30 cheaper to partners and Nvidia will only offer limited price protection which means that some partners / distributors and stores might end up with some overpriced cards at their warehouses.

No, duh, Team Green. I think you're still going to have to further sweeten the kitty before all this is done.

Re: Nvidia to drop 280 / 260 prices

That doesn't seem like all that significant of a price drop. I think they're going to have to go lower than that to really compete with ATi this time around.

Re: Nvidia to drop 280 / 260 prices

I just checked the "new" price for the 280's on NewEgg. Still a whopping $630. Not much of a deal, really.

Re: Nvidia to drop 280 / 260 prices

Theres a few under $620 and some with a rebate. But Still i wouldnt pay that much. I dont think these cards are worth anything over the $300 mark.

Re: Nvidia to drop 280 / 260 prices

This price drop is so lame, it's nothing more than a flick of light that no one would even make out of anything in the darkness. What's the use? It's so funny I can't even laugh anymore...

They can't sell them for less than cost. NVidia fans will buy them up eventually.

Re: Nvidia to drop 280 / 260 prices

Here's a GTX280 from Amazon via Tiger Direct for $549.
$100 bucks isn't a bad price drop...

But, can't you get something like three Radeon 4870's for that?

Heh...it's still overpriced compared to a 4870, but at least it's headed in the right direction.

Re: Nvidia to drop 280 / 260 prices

$500 is what I paid for my 8800GTX, so I'd say that's not too bad.
However, I still think this card won't have the legs that the 8800GTX had. I can't believe that nVidia is going to let this card stay essentially unchanged for more than a few months. Even Maximum PC - in their current issue - says much the same.
In his "In The Lab" section editor Michael Brown states "Rumor has it the GeForce GTX 280, as powerful as they seem to be, won't be long for this world." He cites the die size and its manufacturing expense as the primary reason. I'd add to that ATi's threat from the 4800-series.

Re: Nvidia to drop 280 / 260 prices

Yeah, nVidia is losing money on this chip. And we still have yet to see the ATi R700. I'm quite interested in seeing what it will do with the 4870 being "just" a RV7x0-chip and all.
