Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB WD3000GLFS!

With all of the talk these days in the storage industry swirling around solid-state drives (SSDs), it's easy to forget that advances are being made in the hard disk drive (HDD) market as well for consumers. That fact is even more pertinent today with the announcement of the long-awaited update to Western Digital's line of 10,000 RPM Raptor HDDs: the 300 GB VelociRaptor.

DailyTech - Western Digital Goes Full Bore With 300GB VelociRaptor

Re: Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB WD3000GLFS!

It looks like my new HD has arrived, 30 to 40% faster in lots of apps than my 150 raptor, now thats some improvement. Now if it would work in my old laptop!

Take a look at Anandtech's preview. Looks like WD has some work ahead of them on the firmware:

Not sold on it yet. Price for performance is still way to high for me.

performance- good

price- not so good

increased capacity, amazing performance, SATA 3.0...WD recently released their 2 platter consumer drives and now this...they really are on a roll now

what are the noise levels on this drive?...the Raptors are pretty loud

Re: Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB WD3000GLFS!

WD has a customer loyalty program - if you have a valid serial # for an earlier Raptor you can buy these at a discount and keep / sell your old Raptor. If it's remotely fair I'll be getting 2. You know what PT Barnum said?

All WD drives - in fact, the default page doesn't even list the Raptor line, but if you put in a Raptor serial # it will show you the new ones and the upgrade price (allegedly, have yet to do it myself). Good luck and report back!

Re: Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB WD3000GLFS!

If they make that in a 2.5 forum, does that mean a laptop could be seeing a raptor soon?

but they overcharge on their hard drives if you buy it directly from WD so any potential savings are negated because of it...it's always cheaper to buy it from Newegg or ZipZoomFly etc because the savings can be quite substantial

According to StorageReview.com the 300 is quieter than the 150. I'm very happy with the 150, the 300 will make a nice upgrade in a year or so.
