"XPSP3 will continue to ship with IE6 and contains a roll-up of the latest security updates for IE6. If you are still running Internet Explorer 6, then XPSP3 will be offered to you via Windows Update as a high priority update. You can safely install XPSP3 and will have an updated version of IE6 with all your personal preferences, such as home pages and favorites, still intact."

I then clicked on download again and the window disappeared (not on desktop or the taskbar). I then checked the Task Manager and no windows update download process running.

What does SP3 do with IE? I'm currently running IE6 (I don't like IE7). When I install SP3, does it leave IE6 or does it intsall IE7?

Yes, I've seen that behavior also, on other updates in the past. I have automatic updates set to provide notifications but not to download or install until I tell it to, which sounds like the way you are set also.

My guess is that when the icon goes away after you tell it to download, Windows is designed to automatically restart the update task, and to start the download process, at a later time when it senses a period of user inactivity. But I just ignore the notification icon altogether, and use Microsoft Update instead.

why is the Windows Update version of SP3 only 66 MB while the standalone version is over 300 MB?...seems like a huge difference...I can understand there being a slight difference based on the individual user's amount of updates previously installed...but a 234 MB difference seems out of whack

I think I'll go for the standalone version

On my recent build, for which I installed from an XP-SP2 cd and then downloaded all the updates, there are 114 different $NTUninstall folders within C:\Windows. They seem to average around 1mB each, some smaller, some much larger. And those are associated with just the updates that are uninstallable, and are just for the post-SP2 updates. So the 234mB difference may very well make sense.

Re: Windows XP Service Pack 3 available (for real this time)

Since I had the 316MB SP3 downloaded file, I installed that. It took about 30 minutes, rebooted the pc (I was freaked when the screen turned yellow and the text "waiting........"). I also got 2 CMD windows on desktop for a while. Everything is running fine, and no problems so far.

Re: Windows XP Service Pack 3 available (for real this time)

No problems either - used the Windows update version. Been keeping my rig updated all along so the sp3 update only took a few minutes.

Re: Windows XP Service Pack 3 available (for real this time)

No problems here so far. I installed from the 316mB file, that I had burned onto a cd, onto a 5-year old Sager laptop that was up-to-date with all previous patches. I very briefly saw the command windows that Shadow_Raven referred to (for about 3 seconds). The required reboot went through some various gyrations, but a subsequent reboot was normal. The whole process took a little over 15 minutes.

I noticed that there is now a new tab in msconfig called "Tools," with shortcuts to about a dozen system tools and information things. None of them are new, but on occasion being able to get to them this way might be a small convenience.

Regards,

Re: Windows XP Service Pack 3 available (for real this time)

I updated 2 machines through Windows Update. No problems. Relatively painless.

Unfortunate that this thread got a little ugly. No need for that.

Re: Windows XP Service Pack 3 available (for real this time)

I downloaded the stand-alone SP3 and installed it on my laptop and a desktop. It took about 30 - 35 minutes, but after a required reboot, it seems booting faster. Other responses are not equally fast. Some apps come up fast, others appear to take few seconds. Except for the large backup for uninstall, I do not have any problem yet.
