| Re: Windows XP Service Pack 3 available (for real this time) It's large because it contains SP1 and SP2 as well, whereas the update only contains what you need.

| Re: Windows XP Service Pack 3 available (for real this time) I've done two machines at work so far, one by Windows Update, and one from the download file. Using the 316MB download file is definitely the way to go if you are doing multiple machines. The 66MB Windows Update took almost as long as downloading the larger file and updating from it. Without the need to download, subsequent machines will be much quicker. Work doesn't care about being able to roll back to IE6, but I do. So, I'll uninstall IE7 at before installing the service pack. I'm still debating whether to bother re-installing IE7 after the update. |

| Re: Windows XP Service Pack 3 available (for real this time) Quote: I believe this is a different scenario. What I am referring to is after slipstreaming XPSP3 into a virgin copy of XP and then doing an OSRI with that new XP SP3 slipstreamed CD.. it halts at a file... and refusing to proceed. I have created a new slipstream using the XP SP2 slipstream and then slipstreaming the SP3 into it as referred to in the link in my previous post. Will update once I have tried that. ![]()

| Re: Windows XP Service Pack 3 available (for real this time) No problems doing the installation either way. So far, the only after-upgrade surprise was when I discovered right-click-drag-and-drop popped up a "yes/no" warning box when dragging to a network drive. It asks you if you want to copy or move the file (yes/no). After you click yes, you get the normal right-click-drag-and-drop menu with options to copy, move, create shortcut, or cancel. The first box seems a bit redundant. |

| Re: Windows XP Service Pack 3 available (for real this time) My two main rigs (top two in my sig) both have legit versions of XP Pro on, my ancient server box has the corportate with a generated key - yeah, I'll freely admit it. Anyway, does anyone know if SP3 will cause it to deactive? Not that the nag screens would bother me since it's just a server anyway, doesn't even have a KB and mouse attached.

| Re: Windows XP Service Pack 3 available (for real this time) I've found one very minor anomaly with SP3. Outlook Express gives a "file is in use by another application" message during compacting, under the following specific circumstance -- the auto-compacting process being triggered when I switch from one "identity" to another. (I believe it is triggered after 100 occurrences of either closing the program or switching to another identity). I then click "ok" on the box that appears, and the process completes normally. This does not happen when I manually command compacting, and I don't think it happens when auto-compacting is triggered as a result of closing the program. Regards, -- Al

| did a reformat of my hard drive and installed SP3...some strange issues came up---after the reformat I went to Windows Update and SP3 was listed there...installed it and everything went fine...but later on when attempting to install some "Optional" updates they would fail (these same updates installed fine pre-SP3)...I can no longer seem to install Windows Media Player 11 along with .NET 1.1 and 2.0...it says that something in my current configuration is preventing these updates from installing only way I got it working was to un-install SP3 and manually download all the updates and then at the very end install SP3 AFTER installing everything else (including WMP 11 and .NET 1.1 and 2.0) corny way of doing it since it takes longer to manually install everything (over 95 updates)...but that seems to be the only way to get everything working properly

| Re: Windows XP Service Pack 3 available (for real this time) I listed my troubles with it in this thread. After SP-3 install; Needless to say, I gave up on XP Service Pack 3, and put Vista Ultimate 64bit back on my computer, and am not looking back and as I said in that other thread for some reason, my computer doesn't get along with 32bit XP Pro anymore.
