Is acronis disk director an utility like partition magic to merge / form / delete / edit partitions? If so, what does it cost? I hate partition magic, but it seems to be the only software capable of merging old partitions and new ones into one.

Yes its similar to Partition Magic. One limitation I ran into though is it can not convert fat32 to NTFS which sucks. I have used it to resize partitions, partition and format new drives and so far and it has worked fine. Much of what it can do I have not tried so I cant say.
