Re: Acronis True Image

I defrag all the time too, and when I do incremental backups before or after defragging they are still considerably less than the original file. HMM I am using TI Home 11.0

Re: Acronis True Image

Interesting... zman88, what program do you use to defrag with?

Either Acronis True Image Home 11.0 has resolved this particular issue, or maybe wonderwrench's Perfect Disk 2008 really is changing the files in some way.

I'm using TI 11 build 8053 and PD 2008 build 44. I have tested incremental backups using TI 8,9 and 11 on several PC's over the years all running XP pro. I have always seen larger than expected incremental backups. Now I never set a schedule to backup daily because the quick testing done showed incremental backups were way too large to be worth while. I also never had the disk space to make full backups every day. Maybe this would not really be the case if daily incremental backups were made.

I'm going to make a new full backup and schedule a daily incremental backup and see what happens. I'll post back in a week or so.

Re: Acronis True Image

I've moved my pagefile off the C: drive and before I do a backup I also delete the hyberfil file (if present) my Acronis XP images are usually around 2 gigs ( Games etc. are on another drive as well.)
I don't even wanna talk about my Vista install ( I think it's pregnant ..... with triplets)

Re: Acronis True Image

I only backup my user folders in vista. just reload windows and create the same users and then restore the image and all your files are back.

Re: Acronis True Image

All my data is on a separate drive and I have a clean image done shortly after the install..... At the worst I might have to reinstall a few games.

Re: Acronis True Image

I only back up once a month, some time around patch Tuesday. I never download the MS patches until I back up the C: drive first.

Still using True Image 8.0 something... I keep 2 full back up versions of each partition on a 500GB external USB drive.

TI does not backup the page file or Hibersys file unless you do a sector by sector backup. So you should not need to delete or move either one as far as TI is concerned. Moving the page file to a different physical drive is a good idea for performance reasons though.

I always wondered if it did, I've been doing it this way since the old Norton ghost days..

Hi there,
I am a IT Manager for a Group of 22 Companies. Our IT Dept. also builds PC's (Video edit, Gaming, Servers & Business/Office PC's) for outside clients.
We have used or are currently using the following versions of Acronis:
Version 8.0.937
Version 9.0.384
Version 10.4.942
Version 11.8053
True Image Server 9.1.3920
True Image Echo Workstation 8072

We have done more than 350 restores (a lot while testing systems, components and Slipstreamed CD/DVD's and have not had 1 failure to restore since July 2005.

These restores have been done from within WIndows as well as using a Emergency Recovery Boot CD/DVD.

Just follow the these Basic rules:
1. Defrag the hard drive before Imaging.
2. VALIDATE THE IMAGE AFTER CREATION.

We build 95% Intel chipsets.

For us, this program is as solid as they get.

Re: Acronis True Image

I've never done incremental backups before either.

I like to have a number of images stored. The very first one is a clean install with minimal drivers and no os updates. Then the proceding images would be progressively more complex until I had a final software/harware-driver environment that I am satisfied with. It usually takes 4 or 5 for me.

I also like to kill the start-up processes for this app. I find it works just fine
as a minimalist approach.
I only wish they could come up with something that doesn't instal as a running process.
