Release Candidate 3 (RC3) for Firefox 3 is now available...the RC3 build only addresses a bug on Apple OS X, the Windows and Linux versions are identical to RC2

Re: Firefox 3 Release Candidate 1 released

I hope they fix the memory leaks and horrible UI code this time around (as much as one can fix XUL). The official builds have been pretty much unusable since 1.5 or so, and the community builds are finicky at times.

John Resig - Firefox 3 Memory Use

The UI is the best it's ever been in Firefox. And the OS integration is pretty good too.

there are lots of reports out there about Firefox 3 still being a huge memory/resource hog...kONGO is not the most impartial of sources when it comes to anything to do with Mozilla/Firefox...he raves about Firefox adnauseum and chooses to ignore any issues that might exist...I would do some research online and get some end user opinions, professional reviews etc before deciding the final verdict on this

here are some articles which state that Firefox 3 is still a memory hog...

When is the release date for FF3? I think I will wait for the final.

Re: Firefox 3 Release Candidate 1 released

I can't related to the others experience with large quantities of memory being used. On my Windows Vista machine after an hours worth of use, the best I did was get 84MB. That is with flash animated sites and the like.

From my testing today it would seem that this "feature" does still exist in the 3.0 final.

It downloaded fine for me tonight three separate times, to three different computers. Between 75 and 200 kBytes/sec, over a fast cable connection, which is pretty good considering that they were hoping to have around 5 million downloads on launch day, iirc (thereby giving them a good publicity splash).

Approximately 10 hours ago marked the beginning of "Download Day", where Mozilla is doing some dopey "world record downloads in 24hrs" thing. I believe they needed to hit a million downloads, which they have far surpassed.

Oooh, panties in a twist? That is BS and you know it. Show me where I've ignored issues that might exist. (I usually ignore issues that don't exist, but that's the way I was raised.)

I am an end user too, by the way.

Whenever one feels Firefox is using a really large amount of memory, use an alternative browser and start the same session in both and compare. A lot of pages de facto need a lot of memory because they contain a lot of crap. Firefox or any other browser can't make that go away. If you have a 5MB image it won't take up 2MB in memory just because you think it should.

People can use IE7 if they want to. I don't care.

I've tried this... Opera uses nowhere near the amount of memory that FF does, even on heavy Flash or anigif pages. FF will also bloat up to 200-300MB while doing nothing but browsing forums. Hell, I got up to 250 with nothing but a 5 or 6 cisco.com pages open today at work, and they have no flash and very minimal images and js.

Granted, I like FF so I generally just endure, but it's absolutely ridiculous that this happens.

Re: Firefox 3 Release Candidate 1 released

FWIW, PC Magazine's review of FF3 that just came out states:
In the past, Firefox's memory use tended to mushroom as you added page tabs; developers have made memory use reduction a primary goal. The new rendering engine, Gecko 1.9, reduces memory fragmentation and identifies and removes memory leaks called cycles. You can read the gritty details on one of the developers' blogs, pavlov.net. I checked memory usage under Vista, which reports the more accurate private working set (which is the actual memory the app is using), running 10 media-rich Web pages in each browser. As you can see from the Memory Consumption chart, Firefox handily bested all comers, including its former self.

Here's a link to the review:
