Re: Firefox 3 Release Candidate 1 released

Looks good. I am using the beta 5 version in Linux and have yet to notice any issues.

Re: Firefox 3 Release Candidate 1 released

It has not been released.

Wait for the announcement and download after that. The file may change.

Until they say it's released and links are on the website, it's not released. Regardless of what's on the FTP server.

if its on the FTP server then it is available...semantics of released versus available...they put it on the server meaning anyone can download it...meaning someone released it to the public...just because there is/was no official announcement does not mean that it is not suitable for download

same way that the nightlies are available every day even though there is no official decree every night...it's still a release candidate meaning that it is technically not the final version therefore security measures should be taken for mission critical environments

it is common for files to be uploaded to the server first followed by an official announcement

Re: Firefox 3 Release Candidate 1 released

Until it is blessed it is not released and can therefore not be available (even if you can download a file that will become the RC1). Because there's no guarantee that the particular file seen on the server will be what is released as RC1. It probably will be with a high likelihood, but that doesn't change things.

The nightlies aren't releases, they are builds of the source tree at a given point in time using a standard build configuration available in a handy format. There's a reason they call the Fx3 nightlies "Minefield".

how can it not be available when it is clearly on the Mozilla FTP site...the file name on the server is RC 1...so someone at Mozilla did bless it enough to name it RC 1...whether the file changes or not has nothing to do with the fact that this is what Mozilla is calling RC 1...and they have put it out for people to use (usually what they refer to as a 'release')

since you do some side jobs for them, maybe you could get them to pull the file thats up on the FTP since you are so bothered by it

Re: Firefox 3 Release Candidate 1 released

Well, I certainly don't have enough clout to do something like that.

I've been totally relaxed, by the way. It's just that until there's a release notice there's been no release. I wasn't trying to be a dick.

The RC:s will be called Firefox 3 since there won't be an additional release of the same code once an RC is determined to be of release quality.

The Firefox 3 team is considering releasing a Release Candidate 2 but says the current browser code is not “buggy” as some claim.

Responding to a report about bugs identified in the recently released Firefox 3, one Firefox developer said a number of ”significant” bugs have popped up that may affect select users but overall the code is stable and almost ready to go. The team is now deciding whether a Release Candidate 2 is necessary and if not, the fixes for these issues will be made available after the new web browser ships...
